Please, PM me some details (model no, chip-set[nv/ati] , price, warranty, shop etc) of this motherboard

Foxconn makes good cheap nForce4 based mobo's - these were last selling for 2k or less, no idea if they're in stock here in Chennai. They're normally full-sized ATX boards and have no onboard graphics.

The other option is the nForce 6100 based mobo's, these are usually micro-ATX and have onboard graphics as well - hover around the 3~3.5k mark and should be easier to get than the Foxconn.

Dual-Channel/Single-Channel refers to the Memory controller access. When the memory controller has just a single data channel (64-bit) accessing the memory bank, its known as Single channel ; When there are two data channels (2 x 64-bit = 128-bit) accessing two memory banks simultaneously it becomes Dual channel - theoretically this doubles memory bandwidth. (You could sort of compare this to RAID, though not entirely)

Of course to enable Dual-channel memory access, you need to have two "memory banks" i.e have 2 memory modules at the least. The only issue with dual-channel memory access is that the two memory modules should be matched, or atleast diff modules but very similar in terms of speeds/timings so as to avoid any incompatibilities.

Your old DDR stick would work just fine in single-channel, just that if you try to add another stick which does not pair up well with it, you could have issues runnin dual-channel.

Thanx for the explanation Eddy.. :hap2: .

Any specific brands on this particular chipset?

Uh, but should the FSB match?

there's a micro-ATX version without on-board video thats available for around 1.5k or so in Pune i think. I am using one of that and its stable too.

u can get a foxconn sli mobo for 3.2k! i dont remember the exact model...but had called up mediatech a few days back...

You will usually find both Asus and Gigabyte boards available, both are good enough (the gigabyte looks more colourful :ohyeah: ). Though about a month back when I asked at Delta, due to some Socket 939 board shortage they were bundling nForce chipset based boards only with an A64 3500+ :S
There are cheaper Via based boards available without such restrictions, however in general most guys prefer an nForce. Performance wise there's no difference between the two chipsets.

Yes and no ; since you hadn't mentioned which speed your DDR sticks were, i dint harp on the issue. The A64 memory controller supports speeds all the way from DDR200 upwards so it will run, just that lower-than-DDR400 speeds would impact performance accordingly.
Of course from the dual-channel memory perspective, you would be better off with two newer DDR400 rated sticks.

Ah yes i think thats the board i'm talkin about, thought it was a full-sized ATX version :ashamed: (or is there another full-sized ATX model in existence atleast?)
