I am planning to buy a new laptop. Should I go for a solid state hard disk ($280-360) or an i7 processor ($200)? Although in a previous thread I asked about which processor should I go for, I think it is an important question, and therefore, deserves its own thread.

I'll vote for a better processor since a SSD can be installed at a later date. Also lesser space on a SSD does not make it worth on laptop currently.

SSD makes a huge difference in performance but its not worth paying the markups getting it from a laptop manufacturer. Get it aftermarket and install it yourslf

I too think that processor is more important than SSD as of now if you want to use your laptop for 3-4 yrs. You can buy a SSD any time after that.

Thanks for your advice you all. I'll go for the better processor.

In addition to all your arguments, I was told by a friend that for my needs - as I'll be working on big matrices (not more than 1 GB in size in all probability) to solve scientific problems which 8 GB of RAM should be able to hold completely in addition to holding OS stuff and other softwares. And therefore, the advantage of a faster hard disk (read SSD) will not be much in my case.
