Hi,
Since yesterday, i have noticed that my DVD Rom drive opens without any reason....on closing it, it stays shut for 2-3 seconds and then again pop's out. This happens when there is no CD/DVD inside, but, when i put a CD/DVD, the drive closes and functions properly until the next restart.
I uninstalled and installed the latest drivers again from the net, disconnected and reconnected the drive. But, to no use. Any idea what the problem could be?? The drive is less than a year old.

Any help will be appreciated.

OS: Win2k SP4

Before doing anything - check if the problem presists with another CD-ROM Drive on your system and also check your CD-ROM drive on some other system - this will largely narrow down the problem.

Other than that, do take a look at these.

  • The problem might be in the CD-ROM drive itself. May be the tray is not sitting well in its track, Have you tried opening the drive by inserting a straightened out paper clip and then closing the Drive? This will usually solve the problem.

  • Another problem could be that the one of the drive belts could be faulty, this sometimes makes the Drive behave erratically, first check for these issues before you go on towards anything else. The behaviour could be triggered even if one of the microprocessors is over heating - in this case, you might have to go in for a new drive

  • On the software side - try and see if the drive behaves the same way in any other user account (if you have only one user account, try creating a new one and see if the problem persists)
  • Also Run a spyware and Virus scan, some spyware and virus programs are known to have such affects on CD/DVD drives (one such worm is W32.Jared)

Negative. I have a Writer installed. No such problem with it. As for testing on another system...i will have to wait until tomorrow.

Done....no effect.

If a microprocessor is overheating, then the same problem should be repeated even if I insert a CD/DVD inside. But, thats not the case.

Done that, yes, the problem persists in the Admin account, power user account and in the normal user account too.

Done, no virus or spyware found. Used AVG anti-virus, Adaware SE and Spybot S&D yest.

Also, could this be a dust on the lens prob or something...though it feels highly impossible.

I am facing a similar problem with my samsung cd rom drive just keeps on opening and closing the tray on it's own i had to remove the power to it.
Also i think it's some mechanism fault and not some driver or software fault.
In my view most of the samsung drives (the old ones) have bad mechanism.

common prob with samsung drives...i got soo irritated i kicked it, tray broke.

same problem with my cd rom drive... searched for a solution for months without luck.

now its a coffee cup holder... :D jus' kidding.

I had taped it so it doesn;t open when not in use. now I keep a cd in it all the time. works for me. try it.

It works when a CD/DVD is inside it....it doesnt pop out....but it does when the tray is empty.

^^ LOL....lotsa friends have the same prob...tray coming out, random gunshot type sounds while burning/reading CDs..thats why i never recommend Samsung to anyone now...:)
