Some Questions on Torrents

Hi Guys,

I have been using uTorrent to download stuff for quiet some time but still am noob about quiet a few things. So here i am listing a few questions. Please answer them if possible

1. uPnP - What is this ? Should it be kept enabled or disabled ??

2. DHT - What is this ?? Should it be kept enabled or disabled ?? What factors to consider before enabling / disabling the same ?

3. Ratio Free websites - Are there any ?? I have been downloading torrents from bwtorrents, desitorrents which are very particular about ratio. But are there any torrents which are ratio free and where my speed will not get affected irrespective of whether i seed or not.

4. How to ensure that uploads are counted - I am using BWTorrents and downloading stuff from there. But it seems my uploads are not getting counted properly. What should i do to ensure that my seeded data is counted and i dont run into ratio problems (i am currently in a ratio problem with this website :@ )

5. How can they track me ??

Suppose i download a torrent from bwtorrents and start to download it. Now the next day i just open my computer again and straight away fire utorrents to download the remaining part and also continue with seeding. Now how can bwtorrents track that it is me only who had yesterday downloaded this torrent file and am now seeding it ??

6. Using Vista Home Premium with MTNL Triband connection on a MT882 modem. Any way i can speed up my torrent downloads ??

Asking this because i had downloaded a torrent from mininova having 9000+ seeds but was not getting full speed (in range of 175 to 200 kBps on a 2Mbps connection) :huh:

Actual speed was less than 70 kBps most of the time :huh:

7. Can anyone list some private trackers (or websites) where i can register for free ?? What things to take care of after joining such private trackers ?

DHT is a big NO NO if you wanna use private trackers. What it basically does is allow torrents to be trackerless. Now while this might be desirable in certain cases, when it comes to private trackers, its NOT. coz you surely want your stats getting updated correctly right?

They do exist. However its not as if you dont have to seed at all. afaik they are very few in number. havent used one, so cant comment further.

Disable DHT & Peer Exchange (similar function as DHT) . Build ratios using fresh and highly anticipated torrents. seed for long periods of time.

When you download the torrent file from a website, it also appends a hash string that stores information about your userid within the downloaded torrent file. When you dl using that torrent, this hash string is relayed to the tracker which then knows that its you.

175-200 is good for a triband conn. Are you in Mumbai? i generally used to get 208kBps MAX when i was on the 2Mbps plan. you wont be able to max it out to the full 2Mbps.
Also, you'll generally get slower speeds on public trackers like mininova as compared to proper private trackers.. even if mininova has like 1000seeds and the private tracker has only 20-30 seeds. Seeders on private trackers are usually on high speed connections. Very rarely does this happen on pub trackers.

I think stalker has put it very well. One prime example of a ratio free private tracker is www.0.arenabg.com

I expect 230-240 on private trackers easily, I dont think that should be a problem.

Private tracker store your IP address , hence they know your upload and download count. Also the torrent downloaded from them contains a passkey[ automatically generated ].hence the torrent wont work on other PC. [ no necessary though ]

isnt TPB ratio free ?? no prob till now ...:p
 
^^err.. i can use a torrent file i've downloaded from a tracker on any machine i want to. I can even start dl on one ip and shift to another before the dl completes. no issues whatsoever.

IP tracking is a thing from the days bygone. The passkey you are referring to is the Hash string i mentioned earlier. THAT is what tracks whether the dl is by you or not.

You can get banned from private torrent sites for using DHT.Its kind of a must for public trackers though.

They do exist and they are pretty selective about their userbase,for obvious reasons.If you can't survive on bwtorrents,you can't survive on most private sites,its very easy to seed on bwt and other like it.

Disable both DHT and peer-exchange.Grab torrents as soon as possible and keep them seeding for longer periods.
