Optical discs has already evolved a lot, from CDs to DVDs and Blu-ray disks which can now hold 50GBs of data on single disk, but what next? We can expect disks with whopping 300GB of capacities by 2015 with new technology being developed by Sony and Panasonic.

Sony and Panasonic have announced that they have jointly signed an agreement for developing next-generation standard for professional-use optical discs which will have at least 300GB capcities.

The companies said , "Optical discs have excellent properties to protect them against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored. They also allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read even as formats evolve. This makes them a robust medium for long-term storage of content."
