Deep Red PSP to come with the God of War

80GB PlayStation 3 to return with Metal Gear Solid 4, DualShock 3 included

Sony Computer Entertainment America today revealed at Destination PlayStation, its annual retail and publisher conference, several new hardware items for spring and summer.

North American gamers envious of their Japanese counterparts who have been able to buy the DualShock 3, which returns vibration force feedback to the PlayStation 3 controller, since last year will soon be finally getting a local option.

The DualShock 3 will hit North American stores on April 15 at an MSRP of 54.99, or $5 more than the current SIXAXIS controller. While Japan has both white and black DualShock 3 models, SCEA has not revealed which shades in which it will launch the controllers. Launching alongside the DualShock 3 will also be Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which fully supports force feedback controllers and wheels.

Although retailer information points to the 80GB PlayStation 3 as discontinued, Sony doesn’t seem to be done with it yet. SCEA also announced that it will create a new system bundle upon the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, which will include the feverishly anticipated title and a DualShock 3 controller. The new 80GB pack is expected in late Q2 2008, and will retail for $499.

“Working closely with our retail and publishing partners and sharing our hardware and software roadmaps at Destination PlayStation gives us a great opportunity to outline some key milestones for the year. In response to incredible demand, we will be manufacturing more 80GB PS3s for North America and the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 80GB PS3 bundle is an ideal way to offer that continued value to our consumers,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA.

SCEA confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will indeed hit a worldwide release in the second quarter of this year, which will also launch with a Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack.” Furthermore, those who pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4 will be “guaranteed access to a multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online scheduled for late April.”

In the last bit of hardware news, SCEA will release in June a special edition “Deep Red” PSP model which will be packed with God of War: Chains of Olympus, the film Superbad on UMD and a voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops from the PlayStation Store. Just as the Star Wars “Ceramic White” PSP-2000 was silk screened with an image of Darth Vader on the back, the “Deep Red” PSP will come branded with Kratos – the protagonist from the God of War series. God of War: Chains of Olympus will launch on its own on March 4.

Tretton also took the opportunity to slip in a mild nod to Blu-ray Disc’s recent victory, no doubt helped in part by the PlayStation 3. “With Blu-ray having won the format war, our stellar software line-up and a broad product portfolio, we will continue to drive the incredible momentum we've been generating since last fall,” he said.

The 500 dollar pricing is pretty good considering the lousy prices they've had till now. They've thrown in an extra 40 (20?) gigs + a game + a fancy new controller.... not bad value, though as far as I am concerned, all of the game consoles need to drop prices by at least 75 dollars.

Personally, I think the added 100$ is too much. They should just pack the 40 GB ones with MGS4 instead. I see better sales that way.

Nuke bomb bundle pack! Safe to say this might be the greatest console bundle ever done.

The two greatest bundles ever would be

1) Gameboy + Tetris
2) NES + Super Mario Bros.

I would even put Wii Sports + Wii above this bundle.

(And this would be going by numbers alone.)

Well, Params does love MGS to death. Although I'm not sure how many fans love it solely because it is one of the last bastions of Console-exclusivity that the Sony brand can lay claim to.

You killed your post with the last two lines. You want numbers? I'll throw in a random PS2 bundle pack, I'm sure some of the bundles would've shifted over 5-10 million at least from its total 140 million userbase (the GT3 PS2 pack comes to mind).
In fact, I think this bundle will be more epic'al than NES w/SMB pack. MGS4 is on the patch towards being the greatest videogame ever created. If it won't be that, it'll come pretty darn close, mark my words.

Well, heres a list of top selling games for the PS2
Largest ever selling games on the PS2,

GTA: Vice City - 15 million, (may include PC and Xbox versions)
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec - 14.87 million
GTA: San Andreas - 12 million
GTA III - 12 million (may include PC and Xbox versions)

Nothing else ever crossed 10 million.

Super Mario Brothers - 43 million (most in bundle)
Tetris - 33 million (most in bundle)
Wii Sports - 18 million (a lot in bundle, not bundled in japan)

I said look at numbers only because subjectively you may think MGS 4 may be a better game that SMB or Tetris, though if MGS4 ends up being even half as good as Tetris, I would be a very happy man. :bleh:

Still, what are you trying to prove? Better numbers = Better game/bundle?

Super Mario Brothers - 43 million (most in bundle)

Tetris - 33 million (most in bundle)

Wii Sports - 18 million (a lot in bundle, not bundled in japan)

Two 20 year old system and games. Wii Sports, I didn't know the software actually managed to sell that many units but again, if you're judging software by sales then GTA Vice City was the greatest game on PS2. Same I could say for PS2 being a better console over NES as it sold way more.

though if MGS4 ends up being even half as good as Tetris, I would be a very happy man.

lol. It'll be great to see how you compare these two.

lol ! dude do you even think so many bundles are made? Bundles are more of a limited edition thing mate, enjoy them as long as they last. And i am not talking about the different colours that the ps3 has been out in. Besides don't get so over confident about MGS 4, knowing Kojima it could turn out to be a self-indulgent mess  ( i pray not though)

I was going by numbers because there is no way we can talk about how good MGS4 is and didn't want to get into an argument over whether Tetris/SMB are better than GTA. [Personally, I do not like GTA]

How do I compare both? Play MGS4 and decide which game I have more fun with? :P

I really don't know why I'm so overconfident about MGS4. I just know it'll be an epic game that won't be forgotten for a long while. Even if they end up disappointing in gameplay, the title will be carried far enough on its storyline alone.
@Whatsinaname : Good point, lol. Peace!
