If you don’t already own one, then I don’t know where you have been. Talk here of the original PS1 from Sony, and with that some bad news. The company has announced that they will be ceasing all production of PS units. After over 11 years in service the system has revolutionized the way we play games forever. With titles like Final Fantasy 7, and Resident Evil, the system has been there for us all, and was the first one to introduce 3-D graphics in a RPG game. The official Japanese release of the original PlayStation was December of 1994, and with over 100 million units sold, its by far one of the best consoles of the past generation of gaming.
It’s not a surprise though, with the PS2 already out for some time now, PSP, and PS3 coming this year, the original just had to go. Despite the news, Sony representatives noted today that the end of production does not necessarily mean the end of availability. PS hardware and software are still selling in countries around the world, and even though not new anymore, they are still available almost in all game stores used for very low prices. Even though the system is gone, it does not mean that the games will become unplayable, for both the PS2, and soon to be out PS3 will be able to play the PS1 disks. Even better yet, as part of its PlayStation Business Briefing 2006; the company last week announced that it is working on an emulator that would allow gamers to play PS titles on the PSP.
With such good news, PS1 fans will definitely not be disappointed, and what can be better than playing Final Fantasy 7 on the go. Even though no details about the emulator were released, it is known that the roms or games however you want to call it will be digitally distributed to interested PSP owners. Overall, I personally have to say that the PS1 was a great system, which by many is still, and will be played for years to come.
