According to a scan posted on the PlayStation forums, the March issue of PlayStation Magazine (PSM) reveals Sony's plans to deliver an online gaming experience that not only targets Microsoft's much lauded Live service, but surpasses it. The article reads:

"Cast aside any doubts and start gazing skyward, because that's where Sony is aiming with plans that go far beyond simple leader boards and matchmaking -- or even the PS3, for that matter."

"'It's very real,' one source tells us. 'They (Sony) are dead serious about it. They've declared, and I quote, a 'full-on assault' on the latest version of Xbox Live.'"

"They are committed to matching Xbox Live [on the 360] feature for feature and then some."

This story, together with the recent survey Sony conducted, should remove any doubts about Sony's online ambitions. Is it possible that Sony could create a network the size and scale of Xbox Live in such a short time? It has cost Microsoft, the world's largest software company, billions and taken years just to lay the framework for the current Live service.

Sony is known for their hyperbolic marketing: the PS2's Emotion Engine, the PSP as iPod-killer; it seems unlikely they could take the crown from Microsoft on their first try, but any attempt is a huge relief. It was beginning to look like Sony didn't think the Live service was a valuable addition to console gaming, or a serious competitor to their hegemony.

As long as we can play online on the PS3,I'm fine with anything.IMO this is jut an overhype anyway.I doubt Sony would be able to beat XBL on its first try.

yeah i guess ps3 might not be as good as the XBL but it's supposed to be very stable unlike XBL which had loads of problems with stability due to heat problems. But then anyways, I would prefer PS3 over XBL cause i already own a PS2 and PS3 is supposed to be backward compatible and the games are easily available.

whoops ...hehe this is wht happens when i try to make posts and chat at the same time :ashamed:

Update :

Key Points :
  • PS3 will have online service that goes beyond xbox live
  • PS3 will be a DVR
  • It will connect with psp
  • There are alot of games being worked on for it right now in the US (alot more then what people know about)
  • The final ps3 dev kit is alot faster than they thought (according to the developer)
  • The ps3 will have an itunes type service to let you download HI DEF movies, music, etc
  • The Ps3 will take the media center functionality the 360 has even further
  • PS3 will serve as a location free player for the psp, means you can watch the dvd's that you have in your psp on your psp (from anywhere in the world), or any other video files you have on your ps3, though this is still only being planned.
  • PSP will be able to send its files straight to the psp from anywhere in the world, and it can also control its DVR functionalities
  • Firmware updates will add more functionality, much like with the psp
  • The Blu Ray Player functionality doesnt cost as much as a stand alone player because the Cell and RSX can take care of alot of the stuff the ps3 will need to do to be able to read the disks
  • Fall release date for ps3, no release date for online service, but expected to launch w/ the system

^Wow. Next-Gen consoles are taking it further than just gaming seen above!

Not to mention, more can be added with USB ports both on X360 and Ps3. M$ may counter that list above with extra support from Windows Vista.

PS3 will be a DVR

What does that mean?

PSP will be able to send its files straight to the psp from anywhere in the world, and it can also control its DVR functionalities

PSP will send its files directly to the PSP? So a PSP will be able to send files to another PSP anywhere in the world?
