Sony has been doing a lot to promote itself in the eyes of developers. From releasing full kernel sources before even a device is released to the newest development, Firefox OS preview (experimental) for the Xperia E, Sony is going all out on their phones (the Snapdragon powered ones, the Novathor chipset powered phones from 2012 are being ignored, no fault of Sony there, it's ST-Ericsson at fault). Xperia E owners, read on!
Firefox OS for Xperia E
Sony has released an experimental version of Firefox OS for their new entry level Xperia E. Why Xperia E you might ask? Well Firefox is targeting the entry level smartphones market instead of going all out. This is mainly due to Google and Apple's dominance in that field, in addition to taking advantage that Firefox OS requires little resources to run smoothly.
Understanding the implementation of Firefox OS on smartphones (by SONY):
Sony does warn that the software isn't ready yet and is for experimental purposes only.

- Gonk, which is the middleware that consists of a Linux kernel together with several software libraries and a hardware abstraction layer. Gonk runs on top of the mobile chipset that includes hardware and device drivers.
- Gecko, which is the application runtime that implements the HTML5, CSS and JavaScript execution environment.
- Gaia, which is the user interface in Firefox OS and provides the home screen and application launcher user experience.
Sony does warn that the software isn't ready yet and is for experimental purposes only.
- No radio connectivity available, due to that this software has not passed certification and type approval. This means that you cannot make any phone calls or use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
- The functionality of the SD card might be unstable.
- The touch sensitivity is not fully calibrated.
