Problems with the production of Blu-ray's blue laser diode forced Sony to cut the launch availability of its next generation video game console Playstation 3 from 2 million to 500,000 units worldwide, according to report published by AP today.
In spite of the production problems, Sony is sticking to the 17 November launch in the U.S., as well as 11 November in Japan. However, the severe shortage has caused Sony to push back the release date in Europe from 17 November to March of 2007. In the U.S., the amount of PS3 units available at launch will be a mere 400,000. Japan will get the remaining 100,000.

Rumors have been floating around for months that there were problematic production issues for the PS3, but Sony had flatly denied these allegations, up until last month. However, because of the shortage of Blu-ray components, the company had to reduce on their original production forecast.

Sony is now predicting 2 million units to be released by the end of the year. Originally, the firm had planned to ship 4 million units by 31 Dec. Sony believes it will able to catch up by March of next year and still meet the 6 million unit mark worldwide by then.

Man, That is just sad. Not even a million worldwide? People will will be killing each other to get one of these. They should have done themselves a favour and shifted the release date to sometime next year but Sony has to be so damn stubborn.

Well maximum of the people will be waiting for price cuts and the people who can afford it will have it in their hands.. Unlike X360 when there was no sign of console for over 4-5 months after it went out of stock, the PS3 will be stocking up stores on a weekly basis, which is better than nothing...

Most of the people moaning will be the people who cant afford the system at launch....

akS !

People were moaning about the price since it was announced and this latest development will do nothing to change that.

It's really the people who wanted to have one but now ca'nt because Sony decided to launch with such a shamefull number of consoles who will be left moaning.

All this will be more great news for Nintendo's Wii!! The more cost, less availability looks like its bad times for PS3. Hopefully, the more demand for PS3 wont increase the price at retail outlets!!

The price is justified in each and every way, just that Sony has put in too much this time. Though I wonder if those half a million will even last long enough, considering the first ones will go to pre-orders...people in India should get and wait for the PAL version on the Ps3.

I do'nt have a problem with the price at all. With Blu-Ray thrown in you could'nt ask for a better one. It's Blu-ray itself that I have a problem with. It seems to be hurting Sony and the PS3 even before launch by severely limiting how many consoles they can put up.

I think people in India may have to wait till next year to get one or at least until next year if they do'nt want to pay obscene amounts and have it this year itself.
