Sony is currently considering the possibility of an online payment model to curb preowned sales, similar to EA's online pass method.

Sony is specifically looking to implement online pass features in its first-party titles.

Similar to EA's model, the pass would open up online features in each game to those buying second hand. Alternatively, if you buy the game new, you get a code in the box for free.

“Sony joins a list of developers already using the online pass model, including Ubisoft, EA and THQ”

Sony European president Andrew House explained, "On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we're broadly supportive of that."

NowGamer also spoke to THQ creative director Cory Ledesma about its move into the online pass space.

"I don’t think we really care whether used game buyers are upset, because new game buyers get everything," Ledesma explained, "If used game buyers are upset that they don’t get the online feature set I don’t really have much sympathy. It’s a little blunt, but I hope we don’t disappoint people and I hope people understand that when a game is bought used we get cheated and I don’t think anyone wants that."

Get Polling Guys.

I have seen the prices of PS2 games dropping to paltry sums after PS3 launch.

They def are earning money on those current prices as well. So definitely they have the option to reduce the prices which they are not.

In effect they are recovering money from first hand sales itself be it any console.

If they reduce the original pricing then its kinda okay but in the current scenario.. a big No.

I don't see why this is a bad thing and where full price vs reduced price comes into the picture here. When someone buys a game second hand, he does not get the bonus content/on-line content in the game as its locked to the game account/handle created by the original buyer or in some cases the second hand buyer is reduced to use the handle that the original buyer created (provided that info was also given as part of the sale). This option allows a second hand buyer to pay a fee and unlock that content and play on line using your own customized handle. Its at least better than not having the option to play on line at all. As for making it a standard over all games, I agree with that as well.

The way I see it they are not selling you on line play, but rather an on line account. Do remember that since they have a continuous cost maintaining the on line servers, every new account/profile being created is going to add to the their cost regardless of whether you create it with a new game or a used copy and people are never fond of using handles created some one else and would rather have ones that they have customized to their own taste. Therefore

New Purchase = You pay for Single Player + One on-line account locked to you.

Second Hand Purchase = You pay for Single Player. Now with this new option, you have the choice to pay the developer for an on-line account that's locked to you.

btw SpaceScreamer, unlike what you think, Sony is losing money per PS3 it sells. Its cost of higher than its selling price. It is forced to reduce prices to remain competitive with the wii & 360. See Sony's 2009 conference call and financial results. theyre making money in their other depts and plowing that cash into the PS dept. Their PS2 is still a big cash generator for them.

Just something to think about.

nope

that was the case back in 09 not anymore....with the slim model (reduced cost of manufacturing)ps3 is eaning money on console......though it is said that the margins r not good but still it is making money.......and same goes for ps2 since sony are commited to have atleast a 10yr lifecycle for their consoles so one is sure that ps2 wont be abandoned by 2012 atleast....

DEVELOPERS are justified

but it cause problems for the consumers at the same time

when i buy a game,i should have the right to lend the the full game experience to my friends or anybody other

damn gamestop, its all because of you
