Sony and Fon are going to work together to give Japanese PSP owners free WiFi access across the country
Japanese Sony PlayStation Portable owners will be able to become "Foneros" after Sony and WiFi provider FON recently announced they will combine forces to make it possible for PSP owners to have free internet access.
There are more than 44,000 FON spots spread across Japan, with at least 2,000 specifically in Tokyo, FON said. Sony will contribute by releasing a new Internet browser for PSP owners to use when they connect to a FON WiFi connection.
Japanese PSP owners who connect to a FON WiFi hot spot will be able to download custom Dissidia: Final Fantasy themes, for the latest game in the series expected to be released in December. Gamers also will be able to download game demos, wallpapers, themes, and video game clips.
For the time being, this is a FON deal exclusive to Japan only, and Sony did not state if the company plans to extend this to other markets.
The Spanish-based company made headlines in 2006 after gaining support from Google and Skype with the idea of letting owners share WiFi hotspots using "FON Ready Routers." Those users who don't want to switch out their routers only need to download and install a firmware update that will make their router FON compatible.
