Sony is looking to introduce cheap quad core smartphones running on Android OS in 2013. The news has to be taken with a grain of salt as we are yet to see a Sony phone with a quad core processor, while the rest of the world has moved on to rumors of 8 core processors (in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4). Mediatek is the chipset manufacturer in the spotlight here. Considering their recent success at penetrating budget markets with their single and dual core ARM Cortex A9 based chipsets, there may be some real hope for this one.
Mediatek MT6589 quad core SOC
The SOC of choice here seems to be the Mediatek MT6589. From all we could gather, the Mediatek MT6589 should pack a feature set as follows:
While Sony hasn't made any official orders, looking at the spec sheet we don't think it will be long before they do. At the same time, we wonder what happened of the Novathor Chipsets.

- PowerVR SGX 544 GPU
- Built on the 28 nm manufacturing process
- Support for upto WXGA (1280x800) displays
- Support for LPDDR2 RAM
- upto 13 MP camera support
While Sony hasn't made any official orders, looking at the spec sheet we don't think it will be long before they do. At the same time, we wonder what happened of the Novathor Chipsets.
