Microsoft is in talks with Sony about the possibility of adding Blu-ray technology to Xbox 360, reports the Financial Times.

Speaking at a media dinner, Sony Electronics US president Stan Glasgow said the company is in talks with both Microsoft and Apple to add Blu-ray drives to their hardware.

Both companies have been mostly focused on digital delivery of high-definition content, Microsoft with Xbox Live Marketplace and Apple with iTunes.

A Blu-ray drive in a 360 would make Microsoft more competitive with the PS3, but it would also mean extra revenues for Sony’s electronics division. It would also add further cost to the 360, meaning a premium edition of the console could be necessary. A Blu-ray drive could be incorporated in its top-of-the-range Elite Xbox, or Microsoft could again offer a drive as a plug-in peripheral.

It could certainly happen, and Microsoft probably wouldn't mind paying Sony some money if it meant they could, at least in consumers' minds, take a bit away from what is Sony's biggest competitive advantage with PlayStation 3.

And yet I don't see it happening this generation. I imagine Blu-ray might be a better choice for Xbox 720.

This was always on the card , MS going the Blu-Ray way and with HDDVD out MS has no options.

Why do you think MS has no options and so going to release a Blue Ray drive. In fact I think they were the people who had the most options. They have already done the intelligent thing by not integrating a HD DVD or Blue Ray drive in the console. So they were open to both HD DVD and Blue Ray.

Were you thinking that Sony wud have come out with a HDDVD version of PS3 , that was never gonna happen.

Didn't understand what you wanna get at.

Sony choose Blue Ray for the PS3 even before either of the technologies got wide acceptance. So they had to sell the PS3's at a loss and still have higher console/game prices than the competition and had Blue Ray not become the standard, they could still have used blue ray discs for the games. The only thing is that the manufacturing of the drives/discs would work out costlier. You don't need to stick to a format widely accepted by the movie production industry to be able to sell your games too. PSP uses proprietary UMD discs and they do sell don't they? When the company is capable of selling a millions of units of its consoles it does not matter much what format they use. Its just that would work out costlier or loose the movie playing functionality.

Same goes for MS. They too can afford a proprietary format if they choose. But they didn't take the risk like Sony and instead sticked to Dual Layer DVD for games and only when it seemed like HD DVD is going to to be the widely accepted format, they choose to release a HD DVD add-on. If Blue Ray had shown more promise, they would have gone ahead and released a Blue-Ray add-on. MS does not love/hate HD DVD or Blue Ray. They are in the market to make money and they will adopt to which ever is the best option for them.

Let us put it this way - MS had some stake in HDDVD, but nowhere near as much as Sony had in Bluray.

HDDVD crashed, it hardly affected MS. They could move on.

If Bluray had failed... Sony would have been filing for bankruptcy.

^Do you deny it? They have put in a lot of money. Remember - Sony has basically two profitable divisions. One is the movie making, the other is the playstation group (which has been hard times over the last year, but that is OK because the PS3 is still new). A failed Bluray = failed PS3 , failed Bluray = problems for the movie studio division.

The other groups in Sony have not been doing too great (most people hate Sony's consumer electronics. They've managed to get back some of their quality with Bravia, but their Wega line that preceded it was atrocious).

sony is a 45 billion dollar company. 1 failed format will not kill them.

I think sony is big enough a company to take that kind of risk without loosing its head. I dont see why its console business would suffer. There are many consoles in the market with proprietery technologies and they do sell.

No one except Sony uses Memory Stick format, but sony still manages sell its memory sticks because sony manages to sell its products which use the memory sticks. Same goes for console business, its the consoles and games that they are selling. People would not stop buying PS3's or games just because the games are on a non-standard media or because PS3 cannot play HD-DVD.

I do agree the impact of the Blue-Ray failing would be a lot on sony, but it woundnt be as dramatic as sony filing for bankruptcy.

Same goes for Microsoft, They could have chosen to use HD-DVD for games on the XBOX360 and even if its not accepted by the movie industry.

since i can't edit my post, have you heard of betamax or atrac or minidisc? saying things like sony will go bankrupt is ridiculous.

VERY TRUE,, at the end of day most of their product DELIVER

Wht I think/feel M$ is more of a bania in comparison to Sony--their products are like half cooked junk food--tempting to look-easy 2 buy-yummy 2 eat--but not good for ur health...they claim Xbox360 to be next generation with last generation DVD--dont even lunce with their supported format HD DVD--they came into console with Xbox-Halo--people buys a lot n talked a lot--haloism a lot-and FORGOT a lot while playing GOD of WAR with a dying PS2

Smart move by MS. Why get caught in the bloodshed when they can come in afterwards and side with the winner?

Also, Sony stuff is hardly reliable either. The PS2 was the least durable among all three consoles last gen.
