Earlier Harry1 brought news of Sonys new Video Market, but now we have a update...

UPDATE:

Sony got in touch with GameSpot, and released the following statement on the news: "Beyond games, PSP and PS3 both provide an exceptional opportunity for the downloading and viewing of all types of entertainment content, including movies, television shows, videos and music. As we have stated in the past, we are exploring a number of options to supply such content, including working very closely with all the entertainment divisions within the Sony family."

The reply continues, "At this time, we have not confirmed any further news regarding a potential movie download service for the PSP. You can expect to hear more about downloadable content for the PSP and the PS3 in the coming year."

PRESS RELEASE:

Sony plans on launching their new movie download service in early 2007. This is a new rival to the Apple iTunes will allow the user to download movies to a computer and transfer the movies to a MemoryStick memory card for viewing on the PSP.

The new service is developed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and complements the more than 20 million Sony PSPs sold worldwide. One drawback is the lack of a built-in hard drive for the PSP. Sony does state that the 4GB MemoryStick holds up to 10 feature films, but the Apple iPod video has 30GB and 80GB internal drive and Microsoft's Zune player a 30GB drive.

One advantage that the PSP has to the Zune and the iPod is the screen size. The PSP enjoys a 4.3 inch widescreen display while the Zune has a 3 inch and the iPod a 2.5 inch screen. The PSP further offers a nigher resolution and more colors. Of course we have seen the dwindling offering of the Sony UMD film format, so it appears that Sony may be trying to beef-up the movie offering for the PSP again using the download service and their MemoryStick.

Well the PSP does have the potential I guess. The PSP's screen can do beautiful movies. Sony will also introduce 8gb+ cards in 2007.

(edit : its already been posted, sorry :

Also for those who are wondering, the pic, PSP is running ITUNES through homebrew.

hehe ok... no probs... was playing around.

But abt Sony competing with itunes. It will be very tough. One of the main reasons the itunes store became so popular was because of the popularity of the ipods.

Sony dont have any major success story in the mp3 segment. If they start offering downloadable movies which can not only be played on the PSP and PS3 but also ipods, Zunes and Zens, then it can be a success......

I don't see a huge market. All said and done, after the initial euphoria over video downloads for the ipod, you don't hear if Apple is making any money on them. My bet is that they are just added sweeteners, but they won't get you much money. Why do you think the UMD format was a loss? People won't spend too much on a video that plays on a tiny format screen. The price they would be willing to pay is too low to make a profit.
