For those doubting the strength of the glass, watch torture videos of AcroS, active ans go. ;)

Though of course, as alpha said its not invincible glass lol.

With a little care you can easily do without a cover. I dont use any cases either and wont use for the Z as well.

Very brave!

Sony Xperia Z Review - Phone Reviews and Video | Stuff magazine

Verdict:

It’s no mean feat to take on the Galaxy S3 (and Nexus 4) and live to tell the tale but the Xperia Z has stolen our top spot away from Samsung in style. Not only does it make Samsung’s flagship look like a cheap toy with its tempered glass build and thoughtful design details, the Xperia Z also ups the ante with serious specs: a pin-sharp 5in 1080p screen, 4G, a quad-core Snapdragon brain and Jelly Bean 4.2 due just after launch. Sure, you may not feel the full benefit of those stonking figures right now, but you will have a lightning-fast, future-proof beast of a handset.

But it’s not all about the spec wars. Its battery-boosting Stamina mode will make sure the Xperia Z outlasts its rivals, and with a tough pavement-proof screen, intuitive compact-cam style photo controls and a waterproof body, it’s clear that Sony’s really looking out for the everyday gadgeteer. So much so, that the Xperia Z is now our new No.1 smartphone.

At the end of the day, it is glass. And with sufficient application of force it will shatter / scuff / crack.

The statement is like saying. It is water-resistant = it is water-proof.
Well it's not as if you're going to use a hammer on it. If it's 6 times stronger than Gorilla, then that's pretty amazing for daily usage and completely negates the need of a screenguard.

^ A regular screenguard is not used to protect a phone's display from shattering because it simply can't. It's used to protect from scratches that develop from every day usage. Both Gorilla Glass and Gorilla Glass 2 can shatter as well as develop micro scratches due to dust particles or sharp metal objects in your pockets over a period of time. It just takes longer than regular displays. I'm not sure about this new display technology from Sony, but it's always better to use a screenguard than to repent later.

But this model already has a factory screen-guard applied. They why another is needed?
