Sound activated LEDs?

I was thinking of pimping up my desk a little bit. I'm looking for a sound activated module with LED lights. I will be placing it behind my monitor so the light kind of surrounds it. Nothing will be inside the case.
Any idea what and where I should be looking at? I don't mind a little DIY if it's simple.

What kind of sound triggers do you need? Music, clap, fart? How should the lights respond - simple switching, brightness variation, 1970's discotheque? More comlex requirements will mean more complex sensors and light control circuitry. A very simple desk thump sensor and light switching could be put together for a hundred bucks or so.

Then again, this kind of stuff is available off the shelf in your local market as well.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. I need something that switches the LEDs on or off depending on the music beats. However, the switching should be very subtle (less sensitive to the music), I don't want a flickering haven that'll give me seizures. The switching part should also be a slow transition from on to off, but should be quick when switching on.
Obviously, the LEDs should also be able to glow in continuous brightness mode too.
I'm not really aware of what kind of sensors are used. There are a few PC modding accessories like Sunbeam/Logisys etc that make sound activated modules for CCLs. I'm not sure if they will suit my requirements though.

As you said, I think I could find something in the local markets.

Wont be difficult to rig up with Arduino or a Pi, but ensuring you get a smooth switching maybe a bit difficult.

Go with whats available OR get one of those Ambilight clones and use a visualisation.

Something like this:

I do have a RPi I can use. I don't really wanna make this a big project. :p

Ambilight is really cool and interesting to do. However, that is mainly for visual content. I'm not sure how it will look like for audio only stuff. It'll work if visualizations are enabled.

Yeah the videos have more flickering than I would ideally want.
I'd want something simple to do and not put in a lot of efforts to be honest. But if i do find something cool and if it's worth doing it, I wouldn't mind.
Ofcourse it will be awesome if I can find something in the market.
