Hello ppl, I need some help regarding my PC sound and i would be glad if you could help me out. I have a HP Polk audio speaker system that runs from an onboard AC 97 sound device. Recently i got my motherboard changed, so now i have a new Intel Motherboard (for P |||) But the porblem is, that my sound system has gone down. Not down exactly, its just that the amplitude is too low, even at full volume its very very low. I tried settings for my speaker, Windows Volume control...even updating my AC 97 drivers but of no avail. How do I get the sound to work louder(just as it was before)

i checked intel's download section, it said that AC97 drivers were to be downloaded from Realtek's site (thats where i got the drivers from)
since I can Hear the sound (but with smaller amplitude), i wonder if its the drivers or something else?
Is there any setting to increase the sound level from the motherboard or something like that?

dude , you need to get other speakers. the polks are passive, and were driven by an amp on the older soundcard. newer onboards dont have em. best option -> newer speakers.
else you might try getting a seperate amp, or buying a cheap 2.1 and using its amp unit for the satellites.

^ Greenhorn is right on mate! Had upgraded a cousin's HP system recently, which had the same Polk Audio speakers with the same result as you. You can try it with any other soundcard to confirm. 
Those Polk Audio speakers are "Passive" speakers i.e. they dont have their own source of power and need an amp to power them. The original HP board had an amp in addition to the onboard sound.
Any other board with onboard sound will not have the additional amp, so your volume will quite obviously be low. Most present soundcards dont have any onboard amps (apart from low powered amps for headphones), so thats not a solution either. You would definitely need a make-shift low-wattage amp or a new set of speakers to fix the problem.

^ Buyin a pair of speakers is more than enough - will come equipped with its own amp. You would need a new soundcard only if you wanted better quality than the onboard sound.

Altec Lansing tends to have a much better lineup, but it depends entirely on the model and not the brand! Whats your budget anyway?
^^There are some, but they're absoutely not worth it. The cheapest 5.1 to consider is the Altec Lansing 251i or creative Inspire(barely) for around 4k. You would be much better off buying a 2.1 system for that budget. A 2.1 is sufficient if u listen to a lot of music. But if watch a lot of movies or even in gamin 5.1 shines

better not do that. might killl your onboard. hook them up to a music system , or use your headphones. the onboards dont have the juice to drive whole speakers
OK, returning to this topic after a long time, but I find going without sound isnt easy, so i wanna get new headphones. There are two problems- 1)Do Headphones have an inbuilt amp coz my mobo doesnt (refer to previous posts)
2)Do they have a USB/Ps2 conenctor. My mobo doenst have OFC connectors ?

1) you dont need an amp to drive headphones. they will work with any soundcard that you can buy today!
2)you dont need a usb/ps2/OFC connectors!
all you need is a plain old stereo line out jack (that port where you are plugging your speakers into right now ) and plug you heaphones there instead

I got onboard sound,no external soundcard.
Budget is arnd Rs 500
I found a decent Philips SHS3201 , atleats they look nice, no idea abt sound quality. Main purpose is listening music,game sounds
Onboard will work fine with headphones too, external Soundcards are only needed for better sound quality.
Whatever headphones you buy, make sure they are comfortable to wear, the smaller headphones can start hurting hte ear after sometime, no probs with the big fluffy ones, except the ears getting no air part.
