Laptops Sound solutions for a laptop. :D

hi all,

Need an external sound-card and a set of speakers for under 10k or in that range for my laptop.

What are the good models out there for the sound-card apart frm the mind-numbingly expensive creative ones? And how much does it cost currently?

speakers-wise: the usage is mainly for movies, so a 5.1 or higher is better. :)

thanks.

ahh.. well as far as i m concerned... i just plug in my laptop to my music system... which is 8.8 kW nd it sounds like as if m in theatre :D :D :ohyeah:

How keen are you on importing it?

There are some fringe manufacturers who make some very good stuff for not much money, and you can hook them up to speakers or 'phones. Though 10K will not be enough - it will climb a bit (12-14K is what you need to look at). The MX5021 is a good choice of speakers, plus the cost of the card/DAC. Head over to Head-Fi.org: Headphones, iPod earphones, portable audio, MP3 players, high-end audio for links, there are some good options at about 60-100 USD with sources.

Recommend a USB sound card pls :) - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio
Modestly Priced USB DAC? - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio

Two links with some recommendations right there.

In India you can try those little external Sound Blasters, will be better than the onboard laptop sound. That will be closer to your budget range.

The definitive solution is the E-mu 0404 USB, though that will be difficult to find, and way outside your budget anyway. And so will the better pro audio PCMCIA cards. All of these will be overkill for your budget and application.

Lastly you get dinky little USB sound cards that look like dongles, and the quality on those ranges from surprising to surprisingly nasty. But they're cheap, costing less than 200 bucks each, and buying a few different types to experiment isn't such a bad idea. I'm sure they'll all be disappointing, but you may come across a diamond in the rough.

@kau: You must be paying a pretty fat electricity bill. That's as much power as the entire street I live in! Congratulations on such an uber system.

@d_payne: Please ignore the above post - I forgot you needed 5.1, then your only option is the External SB or the DDTS-1000. And that second one will suck up your money right there.

There must be some digital capable speakers in your price range. I'm not into that, so sorry can't help more.

EMU 0202 USB is the best VFM USB card. Completely portable as well - No external power needed...runs off the USB and sounds amazing.

My electricity bill is just @ 400-450 / month... that includes working of a 42" HDTV too :P :P
