Splitting cable net

damn

Discoverer
I've always been a ADSL user, so have absolutely no clue as to how to split a cable net connection. The only hardware I have is a wired ADSL router. I intend to get a 4MBPS connection and split it between two computers. So I have a few noob questions.

1. Is it possible to manually divide the bandwidth available to each computer? My sister mostly just uses the internet for social networking, so she really wouldn't need anymore than 128kbps and I'd like the remaining 3.9 to be available exclusively for me.

2. Will my existing 2 port ADSL router do or would I need to get any new hardware?

thanks for your time

Does your ADSL router have any extra Ethernet ports available ? Check it, and if yes then you can share your internet connection.

And why do you need to divide the bandwith. That will be automatically divided. E.g. if your sis is surfing, then only some bandwith will be used and you can use the rest. Thats an automatic process.

Ah thanks, rep'd you!

She may occasionally want to download music and such. I wouldn't want those saturating my bandwidth and thus hindering my torrents.

Maybe I am wrong but dont you need a WAN port for the internet and then LAN ports for networking / sharing it between devices ? A normal ADSL router would have the RJ11 but not the WAN port.

Custom firmwares like DD-WRT and Tomato must be having bandwidth limiting options . Another alternative could be to install a bandwidth controller software on PC2 so that it never uses more than X bandwidth.

Ok, turns out my existing D-Link GLB-502T wont do.

The service guy seemed as clueless as me and just asked me to get a 2(or higher) port router. My query is, does this have to be a ADSL router or just a router? I prefer a wired solution, can anyone suggest a decent router or if necessary a decent ADSL router for this purpose? An indicative price would be of a great help too.

Thanks, rep'd as well.

Please give us the model number of you ADSL router.

My guess is that you have 4 ports on your router coz its a multiplay/service line device ..

but only 1 of them is for the PC Ethernet.

Now you need to buy an additional ethernet switch.

------->ADSL ROUTER ---------->SWITCH-------------->YOUR PC

....................................................|_______________>YOUR SIS

Bandwidth will be distributed as per usage. Be nice to your sis and let her to some light downloading, its only fair. :)

Yea, just a single ethernet port.

Ah thanks, but would the purpose also be solved by using a single router(or adsl router?) that has multiple ethernet ports? Such a solution would be much more preferable seeing as how I wouldn't have to power two networking devices off my UPS and I'd also like eliminating my existing D-Link GLB-502T from the equation seeing as how its old and unreliable now.

Absolutely you can ..
Using just a multiple port router or multiple port ADSL capable router? The former seems to be a lot cheaper, so I just wanted to know if it would do the job.

Just make sure you get the ones that have a modem in-built. Most routers will have QoS settings so you can limit bandwidth usage on whatever basis you like, though the degree of control varies from router to router.

I have dlink dsl-502t modem from mtnl with a usb and a lan port and i have connected a computer to each port and both connections work simultaneously, this is a mtnl adsl connection, i am not sure if this will work with cable connection or not.
