I was wondering if it would be able to have a spy feature on TE as some other forums have ( like digitalpoint) .It's damn fun and would be something really new.

AJAX Spy - vBulletin.org Forum

PS: For the uninitiated, it's a live feed of the forum activity as soon as a new thread/post/new user takes place:)

This script (addon) was developed to give your forums a new nice feature by allowing readers/contributors to have a live spy monitor they can use to watch latest forums activity

^ ahem. TE already has a variant called TESpy which is restricted only to the admin and moderators AFAIK. :)

As much as I yearn for such a feature, I guess it wud slow down the forum a great deal if it were open to the general public.

That's strange to hear considering a forum like digitalpoint has it running without any major issues.

Depends on the server capacity I guess. Maybe they have a really good server? :)

EDIT: This might be actually worth a look:

The script works without even needing to connect to any database and relies totally on your RSS feeds already generated by the forums.

So server load should be minimum? Now wheres that admin :)

MOTM comes to the rescue :D

That's a really valid point. Btw, digitalpoint has 6 times as many members as TE and many times more members active at any point throughout the day. Maybe as techie suggested, it does not depend on the server.

maybe digitalpoint has a better server ?

we already have been struggling with server issues as it is, I dont think the admins want to make it worse

The version used by Shawn(at DP) is not the same as the version released on .org. There was a discussion about that in the initial days of the release of the hack. The version on TE is also a different customized version and it was released here before the public release of the hack there. (which btw is not the one you have linked to)

As far as rss feeds go, since there is a refresh period and caching issue with rss, the feed would be far from real time. If i change the refresh time, it would be tantamount to generating queries like a real time ajax call.

And i am sure you guys would know that DP is on a far far more powerful server than TE.

Aaah well, was worth the shot. :P

PS: Was wondering why it was not here. Didn't know it had already been tried once before.
