On a Journey called Life :P
Keymaster
I was just scrolling from the list of new game to come. saw Forspoken in the list.
its been listed for ₹4,799/- on both the platform. Arc Raider is also the same as its a free to play upcoming game.
Now I have not been purchasing games for long but what would be best place to get the games ?
Have purchased games on both platform. but never thought of this before.

Go with steam as there's better availability of servers and offline playing support (not for games but to access your library). Epic only if there's good discount.
I feel like Epic as a platform is still far behind and often times they have availability issues with servers and the launcher keeps getting updated every week or so and it's a bit bloated tbh.

I have spent zero rupees on EGS because I prefer all my games to be on one platform i.e., Steam since I've been using it since the day it launched.
That being said, with practices like platform exclusivity and services like Gamepass and each publisher having their own shitty client running even for purchases made elsewhere I wouldn't mind spending on another platform if the deal is better for a game that I'm really looking forward to playing.

@OP imho, Steam is the in disupted champion, but you get free games and coupons on EGS, those make it interesting.

@psyph3r - you dont do free games with EGS?

I do add but I don't bother adding just for collecting freebies if I have no intention of playing it or if I already own it elsewhere e.g., this week Brothers is the free game iirc but I already played it in 2013 when it first launched so I won't bother adding it just for the sake of it.
P.S. You guys should really play Brothers if you haven't already, Hazelight keeps outdoing themselves with every new title.

All of my purchased library is on Steam.
Have collected a fair few freebies on EGS, but of them, am only playing one as of now. Do wish to play a few more, but most of the time the GTX970 just doesn't cut it, and I am NOT overpaying for a GPU. I still need to exhaust a big backlog library, and therefore, will keep playing the older ones till the world becomes normal-ish again. Or we get the post-POS flood.

Beyond/alongside price, if the Steam version of a game has achievements, but the Epic version doesn't, I wouldn't go with Epic. If both versions have achievements, but the Steam version also has trading cards, I would again not go with Epic. Everything else being the same, I'd prefer Steam as it is a more mature and featured platform.

Achievements & trading cards are a way to indirectly lock people into a platform apart from bringing in revenue for Steam. A friend of mine refuses to move onto another platform and has stuck with xbox for ages because he has invested so much time increasing his gamerscore.
I used to be somewhat of an achievement whore myself but I've given it up since a lot of times it detracts from the experience itself since you're focused more on unlocking them instead of just enjoying the game.

I virtually never actively seek them out, but I like having the option as a bonus as they can sometimes be of a fun whimsical/Easter egg nature.

Not a fan of them being tied to one's completion rate statistic, though (although I think that's also their appeal for many).

Pricing is the same because both support regional pricing that is decided by developers. When Epic launched with the 12% cut, many thought it would lead to a discount but that is not the case.

If you feel more money should go to the developer, then Epic is preferable since developers are earning an extra 13-18%. Personally, I have only purchased Control and Hitman 3 till date on Epic as they were exclusives but my Epic collection is already 200+, so won't complain about Epic at all.

Game Pass has become more preferable for recent games now as I had taken up the 30 month subscription at 2.5k. Steam still has the games that I would want to play but will never have the time to do so.

I use both. Steam is my preferred option due to discounts. Epic for an occasional free game. They threw FC6 for free over the weekend.

I prefer greenmangaming over steam and epic as it offers huge discounts , check it out.
I used to use greenmangamung, gamersgate, driffle, cdkeys, humblebundle, steam, epicgames, uplay etc primarily but stopped gaming now.
I rarely play but browse more nowadays.

I will play sometime maybe...

Epic only for free games and exclusives, steam for literally everything else. Even if steam costs 10% over the epic store price. Atleast for now.
I used to buy steam cards to level up and buy games also to idle cards and level up. Get more achievements. It's my hobby. So I wait for Steam Sales when ever it happens.

But Steam should also give free games like Epic does to boost sales or give coupons also to boost sales like Epic does.

While all others also offer coupons during their respective sales Steam gives discounts but it's not as attractive as Epic is.

But Epic should give achievements like Steam does to display on its wall.

I like Steam wall as it shows all our achievements and next comes Uplay.

Others copy the above both.

The psychological aspect of "free" things is that - people tend to less appreciate things that come to them for free.

Case in point, Epic doing free giveaways for almost 3 years now and still not even close to Steam in terms of revenue/market share. The thing is - when you've built your audience on free things - they are less likely to purchase anything.

However, Steam did do some massive giveaways circa 2010-2015, when it was still growing. I remember getting L4D2 in 2012, Spec Ops The Line in 2013 and Sniper Elite V2 in 2014. Moreover, back then during sales (when Steam Flash sales were a thing), Steam used to hold game giveaways based on your wishlist once you crossed a certain spend limit.

Even few years back (Winter Sale 2019), Steam held a massive game giveaway (this was when the Epic Games Store had just launched and was at the height of its popularity) where if you had completed certain tasks during the sales, you had the chance to be gifted with games based on your wishlist (ranked) games. Few of my friends got Cyberpunk 2077 as preorder gifts from Steam.

Also, the last freebie coupon from Steam was during the Chinese New Year Sale in Feb 2020. Value was 120 INR off.

So, yeah, COVID changed a lot of things, but the fact is - Steam also followed the same route back in its earlier days, albeit not as generous as Epic. They realised that their platform is their main USP, so people will automatically come back doesn't matter if they give freebies or not.
