This is a "for your information" and "correct me if I'm wrong" post. I wanted to get stereo sound with the TV programs the cable op transmits. This is what I found out :
In Mumbai and maybe the rest of India, transmission of TV channels is still analog. The only way to provide stereo sound with analog transmission is by NICAM/A2. However, no cable operator as yet provides NICAM. So stereo sound is not available. Therefore the NICAM ( "stereo" ) version of any TV tuner will be of no use.
Soon we will have to get set-top boxes to view cable TV. Transmission will then be digital using DVB-C / 64 QAM. Along with the usual RF ( coax ) output the set-top boxes will have composite output with one RCA type connector for video and two ( L and R ) RCA connectors for sound. Stereo sound will then be available.
Therefore, when buying a TV tuner ( or even a TV ) now, it is important
to make sure it has composite input along with the usual RF coax input.
