Strange Connectivity Issue

In my Dell Studio 15 laptop, whenever I access the the public WiFi network of my computer center, it works but as soon as I plug in the Cross-LAN cable to share the same Internet and network, my laptop disconnects from Internet as it gives precedence to LAN card over WiFi. Anyway to keep them both working and thus sharing the same network between the 2 ?

No way, always preference is given to ethernet port. It will automatically always become primary*.

*-at least in Windows, rest I dont know. Has to be the same for any OS though, afaik.

AFAIK this is a function of the Dell Tools installed in Windows. There is an option (prolly in the power settings) disconnect wifi on ethernet. Change it/ disable it.

When Ethernet is connected, it does not shows WiFi disconnected but rather shows no Internet activity, no colored globe in the notification tray or in the Network and Sharing Center.

When you connect LAN cable, that doesn't mean it will dc your wifi. It will be on too, just that the connection that will be used by all your apps would change to the LANned one.

Try doing ipconfig /all. It will show you have two IPs one on each network adapter.

Internet does work when you connect LAN cable right ?

No that is the problem! When I connect the LAN cable, the Internet doesn't works. Network and Sharing Center shows both connections to be active but n Internet. As soon as I remove the LAN cable, the WiFi network being the remnant one, shows the Internet availability. I'll post screenshots tomorrow when I go to my center. Maybe then u'll understand better.

Also post your "ipconfig /all" result

1)With just wifi connected

2)With just LAN connected - does your net work in this case ?

3)With both connected

In the adapter settings, you would have a 'metric' value, try setting lower value for WIFI and higher for LAN.

Ok here r the screens and the IPconfig command results. Hope this clears it out. I repeat my aim here, I want to use the Intenet connection available thru WiFi onto my LAN so as to allow Internet access to the other machines connected to me via LAN, in short want my Laptop to act as a gateway.

First its the WiFi only:

Screenshots are as follows

Use a software called WinGate.

It will allow you to:

1. Set internet access connection as the Wifi Card

2. Set the LAN card as internal connection

3. Work as transparent proxy/ proxy with user/pass as you choose

4. cache - save some bandwidth for other users

5. put bandwidth limits on specific users if you so want.
