MS Basic optical mouse USB

My friend is having a weird problem with his mouse. The "Red led" does not glow anymore. The buttons and scroll works fine tho.
his mouse got screwed, he borrowed mine, that got screwed too.
tried connecting to PS2 port using converter - didnt work.
tried on other pcs - didnt work.
anyone had this problem before?

not that i think this is related but recently i did try to install a sound card(which was not working) i got from a friend. resulting which his sound drivers of system got somehow deleted, nothing worked, also his dvd burner was frequently disappearing from the hardware list. windows reinstall - things were back to normal. so i guess that all software.

could it be a virus?
my friend was messing around with bearshare chat, i hear theres some virus going around. there was a virus alert, NOD32 detected and killed it.

thanks

By any chance, is he plugging it into the front USB ports? If so, it could indicate that his front ports are wired wrong.

And no viruses dont have the capability to damage hardware AFAIK. Mess up boot sectors etc at the most, but not physical damage.

yup.. could be a problem wid incorrectly wired ports.. i remember a frnd of mine loosing 2 pen drives to de same reason..

-> buttons and scroll work fine
on a different PC is this same ?
I used to use same MS basic optical mouse, and had similar problem,
in my case, boot in safe mode, remove all unwanted devices from System/Device Manager worked.
Red Light, i did not notice at that time.
@virus, Not sure if it can mess with USB port drivers.

My friend used to plug them to his back mobo panel.

I have checked the mouse on other PCs, same problem. no tracking beam. all the buttons work fine. front or back, problem persists.

another symptom that i forgot to mention earlier - when i plug the mouse, there is no light, but, the cursor on the screen slowly moves to the right corner of the screen. this happens on all PCs i try to connect the mouse to.

hummm, that would be very clumsy of him :p

he screwed two mice, while they were plugged to his sys. i dont think there was any physical damage. something else is wrong.

perhaps his led bulbs have fused :S .... any clues ?
