Well, looks like Quickfire's pc problem is infectious :P

so let me describe the problem I am facing, yesterday night, shut down pc, it was running fine, no problems, today morning, pressed the on button, nothing happened, checked power cable, power socket, still when ever i pres the power button, nothing happens, opened up the cabinet, removed all the addon stuff, and noticed that the green led on the motherboard is not on, meaning no power to motherboard, removed the power chord, and cleaned the contacts with alcohol based perfume, connected it back, still nothing, even the fan wont spin as it shud when u conect the power cable for a sec or two...

funny thing is I have my monitor connected through the power out socket of the PSU and monitor is working just fine, so cudnt be a contact porblem..

also noticed that when u insert the power chord in the PSU just barely, the mobo led lights switchs on and the cpu fan spins, but thats when u barely connect the plug and there is a lot of static sound when you do that, as contact is too low and the led and all keeos going low and normal due to inediquate power i guess, so please advice what the problem could be :S

Here is my Re 0.02 worth of help...

First a perfume on these contacts will be not a good thing - there are oils added in perfumes which will create a coating on the contact points and will be a cause of future problems. Use pure isoprpyl alcohol and clean it again as soon as you can get the alcohol.

From what I have read it looks like a bad SMPS switch which is located next to the power connectore at the back. Check this switch it may be faulty. OR it could be a bad solder on the inside of the power cable socket on the SMPS.

The monitors power cable connected at the back of the SMPS bypasses the switch of the SMPS so it should work even if the SMPS is dead.

ok, using ppc with a differnet PSU, everything running fine, no problems, tried using the defected psu on my other pc and it gives me same problem, so is the psu kaput? oh and its a Power safe 400 W psu bought about 10 months back, these psus come with 1 yr warranty or 3 years?

and used deo, not perfume, though both are same thing, but the cable too is fine coz am using it at the moment and what about that smps swtich you talking about, care to elaborate??

but i just dunno the cause for this, i mean the psu just cant go dead on its own, previous night it was working fine, and today morning all of a sudden, gone :S

Yup same thing - same problem - OILS !!

Cable cannot be problem as the Monitor is powering up... RIGHT ?

Switch... there is a small rocker switch on back of SMPS - most have it but some dont. Your problem could be that this power switch is in the OFF postion - now that would be funny :D

Switch is in the bottom right of SMPS in attached picture.....

lol..rave, u using the same intel 865gbf board as mine?

maybe the problem lies elsewhere then as crazy said

lol yea, using 865 gbf with 2.8 e, exact same as urs :P

and eazy, there is no switch at the back of my psu, so looks like ill just have to rma the psu...

@ Rave,
1) if the psu is under warranty get the replacement.

but if you are interested in diagnosis and fault finding then just replace the fuse with equivalent rated fuse and post back what happens. replace the fuse (even if it checks ok with a DMM) or just remove and reinsert the existing "Good" fuse firmly.
i know the fuse is not shorted since you get led and cpu fan.;)

kindly note:
1) opening the psu will break the warranty seal and void ur warranty, but there is a way to bypass that. just use a hair dryer on the sticker for a few minutes and the sticker will peel off nicely. You can stick it right back after you have done ur dirty deed ... :ohyeah:
Caution:
2) There are dangerous current present inside the psu (sometimes) even when it is swtched off. so dont touch any heatsink / components carelessly.

ps: ur psu is having difficulty in booting:huh: (yes all smps have a booting mechanism too.)
metal fatigue or loose connection of the fuse sometimes shows such behaviour as you are expiriencing. the fuse wire sometimes acts like a resistor  :ashamed: passing only very low amps of a/c current at 230V.

kindly also note that this may not be the problem /cure. as there are literally hundreds of reasons for this but this the easiest one you can try initially atleast.

once again if you can get warranty replacement then do so(sincere suggestion) but if you are curious and inquisitive type then .......hehe

f@uck the warrenty... Do as deejay suggested... You dont want to ship the damm thing back to bombay and all the courier hasseles and all... Fix it yourself...
