Storage Solutions Suggest 2TB Hard Disk - Seagate or WD?

^^... But make sure its CC32 firmware & not CC31 which dies out like those dreaded 7200.11 (500GB) some time back....

Would it be good as a desktop drive (No RAID) which is on 24x7? Reliability and long life is more important than performance.
 
You can also look at the new WD 20EARS(22MVWB0) - it's the three platter version. Use WD Idle tool wdidle2.exe and set the default idle time to 300sec(5 mins). And you are good to go.

Believe me it will not fail for another 3 yrs. As the original failure problems was due to High Load/Unload Cycle Count and the reduced platter will also increase it's life expectancy.

Once again use it only as a Backup drive, for all other uses buy 1TB Seagate 7200.12, even if you're planning to install some softwares/games buy 2X 1TB Seagate 7200.12. These green drives are very slow and have high random access rates too.
