Nothing big, another step up in Dual core compatible with this crappy mobo would do fine. Bro just needs it to handle raids in WoW/LoTRO without drop in FPS's and I know its not the GPU (4850) that's the bottleneck :P :

Budget around 150$ at most.

If you have a 150$ budget get a new mother board and a cpu. Say a biostar TA790GX and a Phenom II 550BE. Would require you to maybe add another 500 buck or so but would be worth every penny you spend. The 550BE is a good overclocker as well!!1

I was thinking about a mobo replacement too but would a new mobo present any more compability issues like the DDR2 ram or the hard drives, etc? I don't want to replace the entire system. I have a 500W PSU in place anyways but if I can just replace the mobo and get a Phenom II 550 that would be great.

^ No i don't think it will create any Ram compatibilty issues as far as the ram you are having are of compatible frequencies, Dual Channel from the same Manufacturer & with the same timings..

Get a Phenom II 550 & if you'll get a good batch then you can unlock all it's 4 cores to get a B50.

Post the rest of your config!!

I had the same processor!!! It was a good one. Currently using a PII 550BE and a 78G US2H from Gigabyte. The combo cost me around 10K but you can go with the Biostar one. I couldn't get the Biostar one so went for Gigabyte. Either of these boards can unlock the two extra cores of the 550BE. You can look for other boards as well as there are lots of them with the same potential.

This is the OEM configuration :

Acer Support - Aspire M1100 Specifications

Changes I've made so far is installing the HD 4850 512mb (not realizing the bottleneck the processor would become but I was a noob at upgrading PC's and still am!), installing a 3rd stick of 2GB DDR2 increasing ram count to 4gb and replacing the 250W stock PSU to 500W.

Also keep in mind whatever new mobo+proccy I'll get will have to do with stock cooling that doing a good job keeping the current 64 X2 4400+ and the Mobo cool over extended gaming sessions :P Besides I'm not looking to OC that much.

Let me know what mobo+proccy I should go for :)

So you're going to cramp in a CPU, mainboard and a power supply in under 150USD? Any chance of getting the old stuff sold in some second-hand market? You may need to stretch the budget by a bit. 150USD is too low for a decent upgrade over your present system IMO.

Sorry , will keep that in mind from next time

I have deleted them

Really very sorry

@OP: What power supply do you have inside the Acer machine? The AMD combo suggested by Anubis is the most ideal one which fits your budget and should give you a considerable boost from the present PDC system you have. If it's a PSU made by a reputed OEM made by Delta or the likes, that should suffice.

I removed the 250W OEM one when I upgraded to 4850, to a Rosewell 500W. Hope its enough! I like Anubis' combo :D
