Storage Solutions Suggest a DVD brand for Data / Photo backup

This weekend i am planning to backup all the pics i am having along with some data too. I am planning to back it up on a set of DVDs and may be also on pen drive(s).

I plan to do this...

1. Collect all data to be backed up and write in as many DVDs as required and store them properly.

2. I may also buy a couple of 8GB pendrives and dump the data in that and not use that pen drive at all. Just store it.

Let me know if my approach is correct. Anything else anyone want to suggest is most welcome.

Also let me know which brand DVDs should i buy for these. I need something very reliable. I dont mind spending a bit more as it is to backup pics and all.

PS: I do not have any desktop at home and only laptops.
 
Pen Drives = Expensive . an 8 GB one costs ~ 700 i believe . that's a whooping 87.5 rupees per GB , for a DVD its barely 2-4 Rs. I have been using Verbatim's for a long time now . Filled almost 100 of them (first 50 were MIS , next were MII) and just yesterday I was copying movies from the ones i had burnt almost 2 years ago . Not a single problem , i'd recommend them . You can buy dual layer ones if you want a lot of data in one disc . Also i always burn disc's at lower speeds (4x or max 8x instead of 16x)

Also , for pictures , the best way to go is online storage . Safe , convenient , hassle free .

How much do dual layer discs cost now ? If the price per GB is a deal breaker then i may opt for single layer ones.

Also with online storage what options do i have and one more thing..i am bit afraid of storing it online as it is not with me but on some other alien location and that concerns privacy issues. So i guess offline storage will be only something i will opt for.

Do we get Verbatim DVDs in normal shops like Anupam stationary (Mumbai) and all ?

- Provide for error correction on the DVDs. Look up dvddisaster. You will lose 15% of storage for each DVD. Leave an extra 5% at the end free as well. So in this way you will lose one DVD for every 5 but if your data is important you will have a better chance at recovery in case the DVD goes bad in the future.

- You did not mention which writer you will use and whether this allows for quality scans, if it does you should check out which disc brand gives you a better write, +R or -R, your writer will prefer one better than the other, also the speed at which it is written will be better for certain speeds than others. I've used Moserbaer (+R) for many years now with my writer without any issues. Verbs are little better from what I've heard, not sure whether they come in (+R) as well.

The above two practices should keep your data acessible longer than not doing them.
 
^^ What does this DVDdisaster tool do ? Do you mean i should use this tool to write my DVDs. And yes i don't mind burning more DVDs. Data is important.

PS: Not much in DVD burning. Have primarily used Imgburn and Nero.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop bought about 1.8 years back and will be using its stock DVD writer for burning. Also this +R and -R, does it matter ? If yes then how ?
 
Dvddisaster creates the error correction files to include with your DVD. So fill a folder with your pics to 80% of DVD capacity, then run dvddisaster on that folder to create the ECC files and then write them to disk with your favourite burning program.

+R & -R are two methods of writing chosen by different vendors. So using the corresponding one with their writer works better. It does not mean using the other (R) will not work its just that the write won't be as good. SO you need to find out which R is preferred by your writer and THEN choose the best brand.
 
^^ So how exactly do i find what my writer prefers, +R or -R ? Also are Verbatim DVDs available in both (+ and - R) commonly in stationary shops ?
 
Would need to identify what your writer actually is. If you look at Device properties what does it say for your writer ?
 
the drives now are compatible with +R/-R both formats .the +R were initially promoted by sony because they felt they were of good make etc.....

Both are equally good but some companies like sony verb produce +R discs. choose what suits you

plus they way you store is essential for prevention of data corruption

If something is very dear to one go for jewel case DVD's.
 
+1 for verbatim.

bulk 50 pack can be bought for 450 (499 - 10%) fro mediahome at ebay. Now that makes it 9 rupees per dvd. Not bad, eh?
