Video Suggest a LCD TV

Okey its that time of year when i upgrade :p... But this time its not related to computers... Need to buy a LCD for myself... Now i am confused between a 26" and a 32" as i am thinking about picking up this for my room and maybe six months to a year later for my lobby a 42"+...

Well lets concentrate on this first... Basic use of this LCD will be that it will be used for mainly DVD viewing and ahem..... Console gaming :p... I know some of you will just kill me now

My budget is around 50K... I dont wanna buy a grey market panel... I*can* strech to 60K only and only if there is a added advantage apart from the screen size as this panel is for my room and not my lobby...

Suggest me a good panel and also the pricing... Keep in mind that i will be hooking it with a Tata Sky DTH connection,A good DVD player and a Console (Hopefully a 360 and not a PS3)

TIA

SAMSUNG's Digital World - LCD TV | LA32N71B

SAMSUNG's Digital World - LCD TV | LA32R71B

by order of prefrence, basically both of them are same panel, just the contrast ratio of the first one is 6000:1 as compared to 5000:1 of the second one

also the Neo Mosel has a MMC card reader as well afaik so u can view your digicam images on the tv directly and i think it also has some usb ports but not sure about this

the Bordeaux costs 60K with some chain of stores in Delhi itseems, ask Sahil for the name and i think the prices has dropped a bit so you shud be able to get it for cheap, lemme know what pricing you get :p

Thats bcoz that hyderabadi has been after this delhiite to help him find a big screen for his small budget :bleh:

Anyway I saw the Sammy Bordeaux 32" for 59990 at Spencers. Its a Big Bazaar kinda store at the new West Gate Mall in Rajouri Garden. I haven't seen a lower price anywhere else.

Also, how about the Sharp models? A friend picked up the 37" model for 80K in Vijay Sales, Bombay, ,last night. Vijay Sales is EXPENSIVE, ask around for the Aquos 32"..

AFAIK 32" models start around 80k. Your best bet would be a 26", Sony retails at 55k. Else import from abroad, could be a much better and cheaper buy.

For tata sky and DVD player plasmas are the best. They have much higher contrast ratio. But the max resolution supported are usually low compared to a similarly priced LCD. Anyways, the incoming resolution on tata sky and DVD are way lower than what either of them supports.

For Xbox, depends on kind of output u have from Xbox. I suppose max is 720p via HDMI. So i suggest go for 42" plasma, would be enough. Should cost u around 60-70k for samsung.

I have recently got one with tata sky. It simply rocks:)

Samsung Plasma? Why didnt you go for Panasaonic plasma (or any other brands reputed for plasma)?
Also - how are you handling burn-in issues?

This is not the real contrast ratio of 6000:1 or 5000:1, this is the contrast ratio after taking into account dynamic contrast. With dynamic contrast even the grays become black, a brunnete looks black haired. And at times its a pain to watch as contrast keeps on changing. In addition there is lil graining due to this. So its a marketing gimick from Samsung qouting a contrast ratio of 5000:1 whereas actual ratio is around 800:1 like other brands. Much like some manf dont talk about RMS but talk about PMPO output for stereos. So no point comparing RMS values and PMPO to get misleaded.
The color reproduction of Sony is much better than Samsung. It has more brand value, in addition the gray body is less prone to scratches than Samsung Bourdeaux. I own a Samsung LCD TV, thus am in a position to tell its cons.

Also the difference between 720p and 1080p is not that big a leap as between 480p and 720p.....

I had seen a 720p video on 480p plasma, 1080p neo mosel side by side(42"plasma vs 40" lcd) at a samsung showroom. Believe me, the difference is negligible on 40 inch panel.Maybe the difference shows on a larger panel. Has to have eagle eyes to make the difference. The colours on plasma appeared to be a little softer compared to LCD. Overall plasma was much more soothing to eyes.

BTW, In india we are poor people still living with standard def signals.

@rshri : Current gen of plasma have fair amount of protection like pixel shift... built into them. Also the panel is factory tested for burnout for 200hrs!

@Chaos : Got a much better deal on Samsung compared to Panasonic. Personally found Hitachi the best in terms of performance, though the difference was small.

neo mosel is not 1080p

FHD Mosel is 1080p but its expensive.

I saw on Digital Duniya on NDTV about FHD Mosel. They were showing the PS3 connected to this lcd tv at 1080p via HDMI and they ran NFS Carbon. It was ultra clear, the graphics was ultra mindblowing.

Errm..I suppose, U saw high defination display on a standard defination signal(via NDTV), so i dont think u are seeing the original resolution! U have to see it in person or on another high def. display with high def. signal to see the difference.

^^ Trust me there is VISIBLE difference between 480p and 720p. I dont know if you were seeing 480p media on a 480p and 720p display and thinking that they both look the same.

what display size are u referring to? I mean the difference is definatley there, but at what panel size, it becomes obvious.

^^Its visible on 32" panel as well. Try setting your TV-out to 480p and watch a DVD on your LCD, than turn it to 720p and than watch a HD-DVD or upscale the 480p DVD to 720p and you will notice the difference.

^^I believe u, but next time u visit a samsung showroon, try to compare the image quality on 480p plasma and 1080p. I was difficult, infact impossible to find any appreciable difference in the video details. They usually have their hard disk based video player. All the big samsung showroom are playing the same video, as per what i have seen.

It might be possible that it was 480p, but i asked them specifically about that and they told it is 720p.

^^ Argument taken.

But I still feel that these guys were just lying of it being 720p video simply as there are not many HD titles out there, not many hd DVD players, not many pc's with hd drives, was the graphic card hd compatible, were they using the HDMI interface.... There are too many unknowns.

Just try rendering text from PC in 720p vs 480p, you will see a visible difference.
