I will be buying a portable hard disk soon...

Am in a dilemma about buying a 320GB HDD or a 500GB HDD
What is the difference in price among these two?

Also it seems that the warranty of the Western Digital products is 3years while that of the Seagate FreeAgent ones 5years.
But considering the failure rate of Seagate ones, which one do you suggest buying?

Anyone know what HDD is used in the Iomega and Transcend branded portable hard disks?

Please suggest some models and also post their prices.
I dont require eSATA connectivity, only USB 2.0 will do. But if the product has extra connectivity options, I dont mind... :hap5:

Get a Western Digital 500gb hdd since price difference is less and onsite warranty is a boon(ask seagate users :p). Transcend hdds are also good. U can get that one for around 3.7k. :D

^^

The Transcend Storejet 25 has got some really good reviews. It also costs a bit less. The only problem is the 2year warranty.

2 year warranty on a storage product is just too less.

Yup, but transcend HDDs really go for RMA very infrequently. Its basically your choice. You can opt from Transcend and Western Digital according to your budget.

Ok. Will weigh the warranty vs performance while buying it.

Do you know which brand's hard disk is present in the Transcend Storejet 25 series of products?
Since Transcend does not make HDD, they have to put some manufacturer's HDD inside the casing. I just want to know which brand it is.
Any Transcend Storejet 25 users here???

And what is the market price of the 500GB Transcend Storejet 25??

Mediahome sells 640GB Transcend thing at 4,400Rs. Thats VFM.

avoid WD drives . check this link for more - WD RMA ISSUES
My 1 Tb external drive that was seldom used, failed on me recently, it was just 2 months old. M buying a new one from Seagate now.
Seagate has moved on to onsite warranty (5 yrs) though Accel Frontline now and therefore there wont be any harm in getting those. Seagate, I feel, is more reliable than WD at the moment. No idea about Samsung failure issues . 2 yrs warranty for a transcend product is not worth i guess.

I purchased a 320gb Seagate freeagent pro recently. My reason for going with it over the anti shock transcend was coming across this thread on google:

http://www.techenclave.com/pc-peripherals/avoid-transcend-products-153868.html

I chose Seagate because of 5 year warranty and it's service center is much closer to my house than the transcend one.

Please note though, that the Seagate free agent pro has a MUCH smaller usb cable length compared to transcend. Also, after using both, I noticed that the seagate takes 15 seconds to completely switch off, Transcend was much faster. The anti-shock transcend is also much more rugged and drop resistant, but also bigger and thicker in size in comparison to the sleek Seagate.

Seagate 320gb was 3000rs. 500gb was 3950rs, last I checked.
