I need a connection that will provide excellent connectivity, good quality calls, nice and reasonable data plans, and cheap call charges. The thing is, I'm not in touch with the mobile operators scene in TN for quite some time now. Would be happy if someone recommends me a good option. The connection would be mainly used for local calls, STD calls, data connectivity and text messages in that order.

Dont know about aircel data speed, but docomo(no 3G network) 2G speed is 128 vs Bsnl 256 kbps(3G network) at least in TN. In BSNL all the special stv's(including GPRS) are through SMS itself and its deducted from your main balance(if you've used full talk time plans.. then no service charges at all :P)

Get a Virgin connection. Cheapest plans, and their data speeds were quite decent when I used them about 6 months back. Only 2G though

@smnrock: Do you mean to say that BSNL EDGE speed is 256kbps? And yeah, STV getting activated from main account balance is good.

@agantuk: Will check Virgin. The only doubt I have is regarding it's network coverage. Only 2G does not matter 'coz I won't be using 3G any time sooner.

In TN, bsnl allows 2G customer to use 3G network, but data speed is limited to 256 kbps. And data speed is based on the recharge amount you are doing. If you do recharge for 2G plans(98rs-2GB, 270rs-6GB) system will automatically set the download speed to 256 kpbs and if you recharge for 3G data plans, system will set 3.6 mpbs speed!

So at least in TN, virtually there is no seperate 2G/3G connections and the difference only in data plan speed.

I have used it in Chennai city and around outskirts, didn't have any issues. My assumption would be they work fine atleast in the towns

All the below listed are postpaid options which i have experience with,

call quality wise none to beat Airtel, but bad on roaming in the rural areas also little heavy on the pocket.

Vodafone, good on network and strong while roaming, my personal best.

TATA Docomo, long way to go though they are on an expansion mode though, but have good per sec billing and net charges infact the best, but I dropped this option cos their taking a new postpaid connection is a pain in the a** and they did not have rural connectivity

Idea got one of the good connectivity in South India other than TN. plans are not so good either

Aircel 3G speed sucks big time. I am ashamed to even post my speed test result here :ashamed:. Thinking of switching over to Airtel soon.

Network coverage is ok. I have been using Aircel since 2004. But Airtel's is better i heard.

Yo Doc, you in Chennai or Pondy ?
