hi guys , suggest me a free firewall program to install in my netbook, should be lite, easy user interface to block some programs accessing internet when connected to etc...no advance features reqd... pls suggest...

Comodo firewall, it has a good internet security suite (firewall + AV) but the defense component really nags which keeps tabs on every exe launched etc. I've turned of defense and sandbox, more trouble than they are worth. I used to use Zonealarm years back.

+1 for sygate personal firewall light, simple and easy.

i used to use Comodo before this and it was way better but I had a problem as it would ask me to log into windows xp and since I did not have a password it would not let me log into the system. Only way around was to log set a password in windows safe mode and then use windows normally. This happened in May 2009 and I switched to sygate after that.

Sygate Personal Firewall + Avast + Spybot (Just use it to immunize the browsers) = no problems yet.

Any of the these free firewalls are good, I've used them therefore the suggestion

1. Windows 7 Firewall, good but not the best. better than nothing

2. Comodo Firewall, they have only firewall option to download too. Infact I use Avira Antivir and The entire comodo Internet Security Suite. I turn off the AV and use it only when I think Avira has got something wrong or cannot detect. Comodo AV runs like a second advisor.

3. ZoneAlarm

Never used other firewalls, so no comments on that!

My suggestions would be :

1. Comodo Firewall, simply the best but not so user friendly. Can be irritated sometimes due to its frequent pop-ups.
2. Outpost Firewall, not a par-to-par product here in comparable to Comodo but defiantly a best bet for some non geek, non administrator type person with a good user friendly console.
3. Best of all, go with some internet security suite like NIS(Norton's) or KIS(Kaspersky) if you want a hassle free setup here.

I second BSOD in the 1st and 3rd points. It is better to go for Kaspersky 2011 Internet Security Suite.

I don't think the Sygate firewall supports 64 Bit as it's last release was 5 yrs back.(assuming you have a 64 bit OS) You can go for Comodo, but i personally use Kaspersky AntiVirus and Outpost Firewall Combo. You can try the free version of Outpost Security Suite and disable the AV components before installing.Get it here - Outpost Security Suite FREE — The first Free Complete Internet Security Suite

You can also use Commodo Firewall, but has mixed reviews.

Maybe you can check this page and decide for yourself.

Best Free Firewall

Hope this helps.

If I am not mistaken there was some worn which was responsible for this. If you did not have Win pass it used to change the password.
