Hi All,

I am a newbie. Came to know abt this wonderful site few days back, and went through the posts and got amazing info.

I am planning to setup a music system at home. I am currently interested in a basic stereo setup. After lookign to many threads here, i find that it would be better if i go for.

1) wharfedale daimond 9.1 bookshelf speakers
2) Norge 2060 Amplifier
3) Philps DVP 5106 dvd player which supports divX (or any other players suggested) ( suggest me a dvd player which supports home theatre setup... which i might go for upgrade later)

My budget is around 20k.

I have one constraint. I am going to place the above system in my living room, which is very big, 23 x 23 ft and has a double height ceiling (around 20+ ft). I dont know how the acoustics wll be and would these 2 bookshelf speakers be sufficiet, waht precautions and measures shld i take to get good effect from my music setup....

Kindly request all the senior members and experts on ths panel to suggest me and help me..

I am put up in bangalore... SO kindly also tell me where shld i go and buy the above stuff... and waht might be the prices...?

Regards
Sampath

Your room is simply too big for just a pair of bookshelves. You'll need some good floorstanders. That'll mean around 25K for the speakers alone.
The dvdp and norge amp will be fine. Just try to increase your budget to include floorstanders.

hi,

have a similar kind of room like yours, believe me you will need a sub or two for that kind of room

Oh my god... what might be the effects if i use these bookshelfs.... will it echo a lot, or will the SQ be very poor... kindly explain...

Floorstanders... kindly suggest some gud VFM at a reasonable cost and available in blore.....

There would be complete lack of bass. For cheap floorstanders, look at wharfedale diamond 8.4 or sonodyne sonus 2605. Both will be around 20 grand.

Thnx Chaos for the info... to get the bass effect... wont adding a subwoofer (as pointed by cyber_cat) solve it.... if so... how much will it cost... which do u suggest...?

if i go for floorstanders... wont i require a sub.....?

later if i go for a 5.1 setup, will this floorstanders be helpful or wud u suggest me to go for 2 bokshelfs + 1 sub...

A subwoofer is cumpulsory for a room of your size. Even with floorstanders, you'll need a sub.
Bookshelves + sub will not do, as there'll be no bass at all from the bookshelves, and the sub will have to be be crossed over higher. This will either lead to a suckout in the upper-bass, or else localised bass from the sub. Both situations are undesirable.

Hi Zhopudey, thnx for the info.
Looks like, i need to buy floorstanders+sub+amp+dvdplayer which will come to 30-35k... which i cant afford it now...

What if i go with dvdplayer+amp+bookshelfs now for 20k, and then maybe next year buy the floorstanders and sub... so then at time, these bookshelfs can be used as rear spkrs and can become a 5.1 setup....

if i go wth bookshelves alone now.. i will miss the bass, will this affect hearing to normal bollywood/carnatic music and movies.... Will it be very bad to hear... after such an investment....

Or kindly suggest what to do for my room size.... any other options... to buy within 20k....(other than the stndard consumer brands)

true, even with floorstanders you will need a sub,

huge rooms = huge av equipment = huge investment

the upgrade plan that you made seems quite decent actually :). People , he's not going to listen to listen to rock or bollywood remixes. 'normal' bollywood music and more importantly, carnatic music will sound quite fine on a pair of bookshelves. If you want , you can use a smaller room, if you feel that the speakers cant fill the room with sound.

If getting a 5.1 eventually is a requirement , you can get a sub/floorstanders after that , depending on if surround or more full bodied sound is your priority. I would go for the sub. and you'll notice a pleasant improvement. and when you get the floorstanders eventually, your sound will even sound better :) . There is no way you can fill your room with sound , unless you get a pair of Public Adress speakers :P , so might as well get used to some quality sound, even if it isnt room filling :)

start with something small, and get used to upgraditis :ohyeah:

Since its bass you need , i'd recommend you look for something with a 6 inch woofer, the 9.1's have a 5 inch woofer. an 8 inch would be the best for bass , but tend to have problems with the midrange, which would be a problem with carnatic.

PS , about the echoes, try draping the sides/back of the room with thick drapes , and carpet the room if possible. that should cut down on the echoes :)

Thanx greenhorn... i am bit relieved now...
I dont want it to be room filling... quality for sound if good is enuf... my worry is there shld not be echo... i will do the curtains and carpets stufff...

if with 6 inch woofer, i can get soem bass... then can i go for Diamond 9.2 spkers.. as it has 6.5" inch Bass... any idea how much it mght cost...

will 9.2 match with norge amp 2060... ?

if i go for Sonodyne Sonus 1601 flloorstanders which cost 11k... will it be better than if i go for Wharfadale diamond 9.2 bookshelfs (with 6" inch bass).

Kindly suggest....

While I usually stick to the school of thought that says "In a given budget, bookshelves > floorstanders"; in your case, bookshelves will not work, unless you only listen to Norah Jones and pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

Hi Zhopudey, Yes i will go for floorstanders... can u kindly let me know what are the min tech specs and features that i shld look when i select a floorstander.... like how many inch woofer, impedance..., tweeters reqd?, drivers, etc....

Suggest some floorstander models...?

You have a dream hifi room, I'd love to be in your place! No celining reflections and speakers set up with 4 feet from each sidewall, mmmm! And very little room bass boost, double mmmm!

If you have a really tight budget and want to go for bookshelves, set them up in the middle of the room and sit close <2m from them.

That way you will not have to put up with reflections off the side walls, and have sufficient sound pressure. The problem will be in the low frequencies, as the bookshelves will not be able to energise the room enough, but midrange and high frequencies will/should be a dream. It will be tough on the woofers as they will be reaching excursion limits, and you will be running at reasonably high levels, but is doable.

The second issue is distance, so if you sit farther away the sound pressure will drop, and you may stress your equipment too much if you need higher levels. <2m will be fine. For listeners on the other side of the room, it will not be as enjoyable.

No offence zhops , but he wants to listen to fim music and carnatic, both of which focus on the vocals rather than the whole frequency band. If he wanted rock or jazz, I'd have agreed, but in this case ......:(.

sampath, looking for bass right now is a bit futile. besides , there is a lot more to music than bass. I'd also say that you get a pair of bookshelves that can sing really well, and then add a sub later to make them dance :P

and then you will be ready to recieve a floorstander into your room. If you plan to buy a floorstander right away and expect decent bass in your room, you will be disappointed. Get a decent pair of bookshelves, and get acquainted with the mid and high frequencies :D
