Am looking to put together a tool kit for general home use. I will be needing a set of screw drivers, a monkey wrench, pliers, line tester, hammer among other things. No, I am not interested in those Jackly type sets that have very fragile tips with magnetic attachments that will break on the lightest of pressure. I am looking for something that will survive for a longer time, and that can be used for heavy duty work. Please suggest suitable options. Will prefer buying online. Also, I am ready to buy items or sets individually, rather than one large tool kit with too many unnecessary items.

buy individual sets to save a lot of money. Best option is to get desired parts on a need be basis. example of you require a screwdriver set first, get that. The screwdriver handle has an inbuilt line tester too. A Good brand would be taparia. I'm still using the one my father had bought. The tools are probably older than me. Get good insulated pliers. Some of these you get locally are chinese made and i dont believe they give any protection. These 3 pliers are more than enough for day to day work.

Monkey wrench/ pipe wrench you need to need to buy according to the diameter of pipe etc. Get a heavy wrench. Its usually easier to open pipes, or other things with a heavier wrench than a lighter wrench. Get these from local hardware or electrician. Hammer with wooden or plastic handles - avoid. Get complete iron or steel hammer if possible.

I bought some Stanley tools some 6 or so years back and they are still good(it should last for my life time). I bought it from a shop in richie street.
One other Indian brand tools which you can trust is: Taparia.

+1 for Taparia products. I have a line-tester and an insulated cutting-twisting pliers from the brand and they are of great quality.
