which router are u using? Better buy something from the same manufacturer, cos they would have surely tested for performance.

it does not matter which router you have. I have Netgear router and 4 different cards from 4 different manufacturers in the different pcs and laptop and they all work with each other just fine.

Ambar if you want to save some bucks i have 3 extra network cards from gateway. I purchased them a while ago but didnt go through with expansion of the wifi network.

I use the exact same card in my pc and it works like a charm. PM me if you are interested. Otherwise you can buy any card. I havent noticed too much difference in performance with either Gateway, dlink, netgear or Linksys cards. So get the cheapest you can find.

you have a good budget (2K), go for LinkSys, after all CISCO original stuff.

If your budget is 1K then go for other brands like Netgear, D-Link, and also X-Micro

I have no info about this X-Micro, but in Kolkata, it is everywhere.

I think its like cheap-alternative.

Whatever you buy, do look for this feature, to me its must -

108Mbps for Super Gâ„¢ Technology (Turbo Mode)

Is it possible not to connect a router physically to any PC but only wirelessly connect to it through multiple Laptops...

YES, in this case any one of your PC will work as a virtual router (forgot the exact term of this technology)

So on an AIRTEL connection I will have to connect the MODEM to the splitter & Ethernet cable from MODEM to the Router... Then how should I go about making a network...

Also what will be the security concerns I should know for such a network... Another question is can I limit the no. of connected users & share the internet...

very much possible.
But first to install u need to connect it to a pc.
For security, of late net gear had some encryption. you cna set a password and use that password while connecting from Laptops.

Secure :)

To use superG you need superG router which aint exactly cheap or easy to find.
And no wifi card sells for 1k or so. all are near 2k range.
