The title says it all. Suggest an Air Cooler for this summer.
Location: Pune

My 1bhk rented apt, is east faced so since 6a in morning the sunlight keeps burning n heating my rooms like its already 45'c temp. :(
Thus the walls, floor, even filled water, chairs, mattress etc. all is warm 24*7.
More to add, I stay on top floor..4th. Thus my house is almost on FIRE in april/may.:sour:

Budget:
4k - 7k

Purpose:
Will use 3 hours during day and may be 7-8 hours at night. So I guess the cooler should be a mid water capacity. Does it comes in litres/tank or similar type???
I have no clue about any models except some names like symphony, bajaj etc. But again I would like to hear from co-owners what factors should we consider apart from quality, a.s.s.before buying a cooler.!!

I cannot install AC as it is a rented apartment and the owner doesnt allow to do so as this is his new house. Also the owner is very conservative n kanjoos jhig-jhig punjabi man.. Imagine he wasnt allowing us to install a wall-hanger and instead advised us to keep our clothes inside cupboard or keep them lying on chair/table.:wtf:
Until we said ok keep the hangers for free after we leave this place.... So I cannot gift him AC for sure...;)

Even if I get Aircooler, I cant keep my windows opened fully, for the obvious sun-incoming reason. It may make matter worse minus any benefit.
So will keep it near our feet so we are in air lows directly on our face/body.

Currently surviving on ceiling fan which simply circulates the HOT air and nothing more... So we sleep in a so called Ccooled hot air = warm breeze..:banghead:

You missed to provide a lot of information..

1) Which location you are in? Air cooler is not a good option for coastal areas due to humidity factor.. If you are in Delhi/Bangalore then you can go for Air cooler, avoid if you are in chennai/mumbai
2) I also would suggest you to look in some second hand windows AC. You can a decent 1 ton at your budget

Also, search this forum, i remember there was a thread regarding Aircooler discussion.

My requirement is also similar to the OP. This is also for my rented apartment in Pune. But usage is higher, perhaps 8 hours at night and also in the daytime. Does the usage time matter?
My rooms are north facing so no direct sunlight inside the rooms but can get pretty hot in summer.

Just got an update from my dear friend who inquired in some shops on my behalf yesterday,

Mccoy cooler- 34litres- 5.9k- works for full 2 days nonstop when filled whole 34ltrs.
Kenstar - 12ltr - 4.7k works for 8-10 hrs.
Bajaj - 20ltr - 4.9k works for a full day.

Also, what is water pumping?
In my native place at Nagpur where the heat touches 45'c or more, all houses use those gigantic dessert coolers which has the pump ON/Off button which simply pumps the water at the top as it can be seen.
Sow whats the pumping purpose? How does it serves cooling?
Do these small fibre coolers have pumping capability?

Why don't you take a visit to Budhwarpet area?
There is a lane where you have 4-5 shops each selling "desert" coolers.
I got mine with wheels for about 4K. The build quality sucks but we are only concerned about cooling here right?
As long as the fan, pump and screens work fine.

Also don't go by 20l = works full day crap.
It all depends on the air temperature and humidity.
Higher temp and/or lower humidity = very fast evaporation, and therefore you will have to refill frequently.

Do keep in mind that when you install a cooler, the fan throw should be in a different room (and the room should have window opened for outlet), and the cooler body should be in a separate room (or outside). Cross ventilation. (Which is absolutely opposite of what you would do with AC).
If you keep the cooler in the same room as you intend to cool it will keep increasing the humidity. (water being evaporated saturates the air and raises the humidity)

^^ all water coolers have pumps.

if you don't have regular fresh air intake from outside, portable air coolers will start to stink in no time. recirculating the stale, humid air will make the room muggy. already explained nicely by ssslayer.

you can get a portable indoor cooler if you have an option to keep it next to an open window.

What about those mini standing air conditioners? You could try those, i had one in my hostel during studies...

In Pune here as well, too hot now a days here and last year we thought about buying a cooler but it never materialized.
I too would like to use a cooler if it is not a messy affair.
Portable ACs is a strict no primarily because of cost and they require some Sort of outlet for the exhaust and it is too complicated and all.

Someone had told me to go to Pimpri market to buy cooler. I know one of my colleague did bought one such cooler last year for like 5K or so with stand and something. I will have to ask him about it.

not even close.
I have a bajaj plastic body cooler in Delhi, which can take 40L water and on a hot dry day it gets used up within 3 hours.
thats the problem with coolers.you need to refill them again and again.to overcome this i have connected a pipe to a nearby tap to the cooler.i set the water flow at such level so that it keeps the cooler just full with the least possible water wasting due to overflow.

Also, what is water pumping?

what do you mean by water pumping?every cooler has a water pump which is used to keep the cooler mats wet and thus cool the hot air when it passes thru these wet mats.

my advice is to go for metal body local made coolers.branded plastic body ones dont even come close to metal ones when it comes to cooling.
and dont keep the cooler inside the room.it will make the inside air so humid that you would prefer to stand outside under the sun instead of sitting inside in front of the cooler.keep it outside on a window with proper cross ventilation.cooler should never be reusing the same air again and again.

yes.from my experience 40L cant last for more than 6 hours.if it is then it means air is already too humid and cooler isnt the right solution for you.

+1
for hot and dry conditions, coolers work great.
for humid conditions,go for ACs...i find it almost impossible to use a cooler during monsoon season.
