Only consideration is that it should be a Window AC. Budget is 10-20K. Actually budget is not a big issue. Also tell how much should it be cost.

Carrier / OGeneral , If the room is small , a single ton should suffice , no idea about prices , but shouldnt be more than 13-14k

Does your Hostel really allows use of a/c? Cuz mostly educational institutions do not allow these or they are already Centrally a/c'd.

In any case you can go for cheap voltas/videocon, 0.5-0.8 ton window a/c should cost around 8k

My thoughts exactly, first find out whether they will even permit this.

Hostels means flat rate for electricity which an AC would defnitely change.

he wud be living in a 5 star hostel where ac are allowed may be :p

considering hostel rooms to be small, i wud suggest a 0.75 tonne wud suffice

go for voltas, carrier,

cheap n best

shud be around 9-10k for 0.75 tonne or .80 tonne depending on which manufacturer makes how much ton ac.s

i dont think o general ac;s come less than 1 tonne!!

Its for a PG hostel ( They charge 5K a month for room rent:@). They don't allow Air Conditioners but we people put it in any ways.

well, what will happen to your investment after a month if some admin comes in and demands you remove it. The electricity bills are defnitely going to go up sooner or later..

my old hostel used to allow AC inside it. The rent was something like 4.5k incl. food.. Last month I left it and took rent room..

btw.. I also need an AC for my room, size is 10x12.. I'm the single person living in it..

That question will only arise if I survive another month in this heat. My room is on the top floor and it gets really really hot. Sleepless nights are the toughest part.

So I think I should look for Voltas or Hitachi AC's.

thats true:rofl:

i m in punjab here and its sweltering hot

cant survive without ac here

par light ho to salla ac chalega na

too much power cuts here!!:P

I believe you are in a situation where longevity of the machine is not so important. Probably power consumption is not a issue either.

Hitachi is way too expensive. Ditto for OGeneral.

I suggest you go to the Samsung website which has a tonnage calculator and work out what tonnage you need. It is likely that you will need 0.75 tons or so.

At the upper end, go for Carrier which is really good and much more affordable than Hitachi or OGeneral.

At the low cost end, you must consider Godrej. Nobody here speaks of Godrej but the fact is that Godrej and Voltas import kits from the same Japanese source so you have basically the same machine. Godrej sells it at about 2K lower price. A Godrej 1.1 ton 1 star window AC costs about Rs 13.5 K. The same machine from Voltas costs 15.5 K. The 0.8 ton should be near about 10K. And Godrej have always had a fantastic, established service network.

If you care two hoots about energy consumption because you are paying a fixed cost and you just want cheap then you choose between Videocon and Electrolux. But I must warn you they are not so good brands. In fact I am told that the Electrolux machines are actually manufactured by Videocon.

Thanks Emil for such a detailed answer. A little longevity won't hurt since it will be easier to sell this AC later if it is from a reputed brand.

Why dont you just rent an AC for the summer months instead of buying one and creating a hassle?

Since it is illegal to install ACs in the hostel the vendors are not ready to take that risk. Moreover I will bring the AC home once I leave the hostel. My room at home is very small too. Just as big as the hostel room:S

For a really small room, a 1 Ton model will suffice.

Options:

LG LWA3EW2DD1 ~ 1.0 Ton/2Star Rating

Voltas Vertis Plus ~ 1.0 Ton/2 Star Rating

Carrier Estrella Electronic ~ 1 Ton/3 Star Rating

O-General AMG13G ~ 1.14 Ton

Onida W112YR ~ 1.0 Ton/2 Star Rating

If it is not allowed to place a/c how would you get it installed? In any case it would be seen by the Resident Warden.

Still go for the cheapest one available in market as you are installing it in hostel :P
