Great Idea Anand,

I am not a circuit geek, Please keep me posted on it, If you make one please count my order too :)

In fact I am looking for some idea in voltage converter circuits. Only experts can show light in this area. But one thing is sure, for devices which uses DC current and consumes less power like routers and modems, UPS is a big waste of money and efficiency. If I get a concrete idea from somewhere, I will definitely inform you.. :-)

here is a workout on such idea ! ==> using 12v car battery to run adsl
thanks for the link. And I found this 78xx - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This mentions the IC for the voltage conversion part (fixed ). So I think it should be pretty easy to connect with this ICs.

Only thing I want to know whether we need to have a protection circuit for the bettery charging and discharging? If yes, what would be the solution.

^ a car battery is expensive but you can use regular UPS battery (12V, 7.2AH) for about Rs 650/-

@ Anand, a protection circuit is a must for the battery to take care of overcharge & full discharge ...

Something like this might work. It has a DC output. Though would need to check the amperage/volts.

Could probably mail the seller and get the ratings.

As already suggested, get cheap UPS 600VA @ 1350Rs (Like Intex) with compatible AC/DC adapters as per required amperage/volts for modem/router.

I have seen this simple circuit . It seems to be okey. Not sure whether it will prevent over discharging of the battery or not. IC 1 can be replaced with 78xx for the desired voltage if stepdown (from 12V) is required.[attachment=6669:12217.attach]

experts, pls give improvement of the circuit if possible.

I am with you. Do count me whenever you make one. There will be many TE users who will be interested in picking this up.

^ its really a simple circuit - any television technician can make it .

appears to work fine. diode in series with battery should prevent

over discharging. similar circuits are used for emergency lights -

which in general work for two to three years. battery needs to

be replaced after 2 / 3 years - better to use a UPS type battery

thanks Seshu for the input. Yes.. a UPS battery is enough for this purpose since we need less current for router.

This circuit will work fine...it's a simple bridge rectifier modified to charge the battery when connected to AC power supply and providing DC output simultaneously and without AC power supply, it will just supply the power through battery...

i dont know if anyone has posted this before or not. But if you ask the airtel engineer, they carry USB to power jack cables with them, which let you power the 110BX, 220BX from the usb port on your laptop or PC. I have one lying with me for use with my laptop ( save hassle of carrying the charger and searching for a power point whenever im between homes ).

Has anyone else tried it??

@MaxFSB

Yes, many are aware of it. That was the main reason I started the thread... but now requirement has changed a bit.. To keep modem on you need power on the laptop too.

Now requirement is a bit different to power - Airtel modem & Wireless router to keep them up & running at least for 1 hour, so it can keep on downloading torrents/other stuff in night.

One more input required, as in the circuit diagram, the supply volts are 12 and 5 volts. In my case I want 12 and 10V. So I will be replacing the ic to 7810. So what about the the capacitance values parallel to it? should it change? or can be the same?
