suggest bookshelves speakers

SMC recently shipped something to Cal without a Form 50. I know of a few others who do it (Amarbir used to, don't know about now).

The AE5 is a very good option, the tonality would probably suit home users better than studio monitors. The latter (both the Rokits and BX5A, as well as Adam) are usually voiced flat and meant to be used in treated environments and at close distances. Typically reflections make them sound bright, a lot of users prefer that sort of thing. You will need to listen to a few setups - not that there are many here to start with.

Under 20K is a tough call, there's really not that much out there, and even less when you go to active speakers.

Among passives, Cambridge Audio has the S30 (which is being sold in Cal well above what it should retail at) which is very nice but it needs an amp, apart from the Wharfies already mentioned. Not much else under 10K (assuming you set aside 10K for an amp).

^^^ for small stuffs no form50....but speakers have big boxes.....so it might be a problem....

so audioengine a5 is final.. let me see if i get it locally.......

Nope. E-zone used to carry AE series at one point in time, but they stopped. Not sure about Cal, I wasn't here then. Check with Bajaao if they'll ship.

I just saw the Bajaao link. If ordering one of the studio monitors, be aware that unless specifically stated, monitors are often quoted as singles and not pairs. I'm pretty sure the Adam prices are for singles, for example, so it's not 24K but 48K that you need to put down for the A5.

@Des, the Mini-Dancer One Beryllium version (which I later bought, and are my main speakers now) was hugely better than the BE-718 which Chaos has/d, and these are in a whole new league.

I say pick up the Bose companion 5. Absolutely kick-ass. You'll be shocked to witness what sound these babies can produce. And the nest thing, audition them at any bose store. Bass and surround sound totally amazing.

^^

ME too... I <3 bose.. especially the wave radio 2.. only bose i ever owned.

and the show off value is unlimited. even though there are far better options at same price range. when people see bose label they kinda keep mum and listen. :D.

And so it begins all over again...

@OP: AE5 looks lie your best bet this side of 20k. If you can look beyond do consider separates. The long term rewards will compensate for the short term expenses.

Bose is a great option if you've never heard a decent music system, or know what music actually sounds like. And if you don't mind throwing your money behind brand value rather than performance.

For everyone else though, sensible spending can get much better results.

The Wave radio is a notable exception, because it is a pretty innovative product. It doesn't sound so great, but the convenience and application is fairly unique.

Bose scoops the midrange out and boosts the midbass, so you think there's lots of bass but there actually isn't. And the upper end sounds hollow and way too bright, there's an artificial boost there too. The Acoustimass and the Companion all have the same sound signature, it's easy to fool newbies with that kind of sound.

Admittedly, those who've heard nothing but Bose and the crap that you get in the local market would prefer Bose, even over more realistic sound reproduction systems because they will find everything else 'flat' by comparison. The artificially fattened and sharpened sound is grotesque to anyone who has actually heard a live instrument, or even a halfway decent system.

However, horses for courses. Do you prefer an orange, orange juice, or a fizzy 'orange' drink? Choice is yours.

If i want to eat a Fruit i would Choose an orange.
If i want to drink juice to rehydrate myself after joggin i would choose Ornage Juice.
If i want to make a cocktail/Mocktail i would choose a fizzy 'Orange' drink.
Choice is a byproduct of Need/Requirements. Make them clear and see how the options fall into place.
:P
Anyways from the first page{Active Vs Passive}(or even the first post) itself you can make out this guy dsnt knw anything about Sound reproduction. Yet we continue to debate about the nuances of sound systems that can be made out only by experience.
My advice would be to stay away from Monitors as they are very critical and highly directional. Decision depends on the Size of Area where these would be kept to a large extent to.
What is left is AE5 in Active.Passive speaker setup is completely a different ball game(Check out T-Amps for cheaper options ).

Oh yes, I have the Companion 5, the companion 3 and the Lifestyle 48 ! Big time bose fan. Yes there are other very good competitiors, but for Desktop/Bookshelf speaker NOBODY comes close to the Companion 5, at about 22k ! The bass is mind blowing and the tiny speakers produce the awesomest sound ever !

Lol ! I think he is totally right, everybody who ends up paying about 1-2.5 lakhs for their Bose HTs have no clue about sound/music :P

Nice to hear that the DMD is a good improvement compared to the Be. BTW I'm planning to sell my Be-718 soon. I'm still in two minds what to replace them with. There are three speakers in my mind so far - Emerald Physics CS3, ATC SCM 20SL and Blumenholfer Fun17. Still need to audition all of them with my electronics before taking the call. All three have their strengths and weaknesses so it all boils down to what sounds good in my rather small listening room.

For your info, an A2 beats the crap out of the Companion 5, and is priced at about 10k. And AE5 beats complete Bose HTs worth about a lac. And I am including the bass effect.
