Does the laptop have 5.1 audio out? Very few laptops do.

ohh yea..good point..i dont think so...so i can connect it to my philips dvd player..dat has a 5.1 output...
so is the creative m5300 a good buy..??

hmm not really ..but for a lower budget you cant expect much .

since its for watching movies ..you must be wanting a 5.1

there's this 5.1 model from Altec Lansing which i cant recollect..my neighbour had bought it for around 4k ..with a wireless remote and all

and its SQ was really good.

had options for stereo/5.1 on the remote.

i think on a budget that would be better than creative.

will try and find out exact model no. :)

EDIT :found it .

VS 3251

AL's official distibutor/importer is in Nehru Place, so you wont have any issues finding it. I guess name of the showroom is Triffin Technologies.

so are these dvd movies you're playing? or playing movies off the laptop? if the latter, then hooking up the 5.1 to the dvd system wont really help much.

^^ naah ..its not always that creative is the best..

infact AFIK altec lansing and logitech make a lot better speakers then creative when it comes to a small budget speakers for PC.

i think creative is just like the ultimate thing for most of the noob crowd who are not much into music\movies or tech for that matter..

try getting the X540\530 mentioned by pappu ..they are surely better than creative..

if you cant find them go for altec Lansing that ive mentioned before :)

ok, so how do you plan to get the audio from the laptop to the dvd player?

^^ Thats easy - A 3.5mm jack to RCA cable !

Yeah, but that will still only be 2 channel audio, so hooking up the 5.1 to the dvd player as a 'solution' is pointless. :hap5:

^^lol my dvd player reads divx from usb ....so i use a pen drive

If boom's player has this functionality...then the solution lies there. otherwise, unless he invests in a 5.1 usb\pcmcia\express slot sound card, its not going to work.

Edit: if you want a 5.1 system just for the heck of it, and are willing to have 2 channel audio coming out of 5 speakers (only left and right spatialization, as opposed to left, right, front and back), aka pseudo-surround, go ahead. Otherwise, id suggest you either invest in the sound card i mentioned above, or buy a good set of 2.1's instead of the 5.1's with the same budget.
