Hello There,

Friends there is Power Cuts in Summer in our area and also load shading is started in our area cause in suddent power fails.

So to protect my work loss (from sudden shutdown) as well as Computer and it's delecated parts I need "GOOD UPS."

Some where I read UPS with RS 232 Port is Very Good. I don't understand the reason for RS 232 Port requirements but as suggest by some reputed Hardware Review Sites I like to go for it.

Can any one please make me understand need of RS 232 Port in UPS.

My System Currently have Monitor, Multimedia with DVD Writer and Printer but in future I want to add FAX + Scanner.

Now suggest which is best option available in Market and at what Price?

Thank You.:)

Thanks Eazy,

But I didn't find RS 232 Port in APC UPS. Is it must factor for Latest Tech UPS?

Any one please help/suggestion me on this point.:S

RS232 is a serial port which was used on older UPS to connect to the PC. The current UPS have USB connections to the computer so the PC can monitor the health of the UPS and the UPS can shut down the PC via the USB conx when batteries are low.

Hey Eazy,

It seems you have well knowledge of Hardware and UPS too.

Now I am confused at APC site and can't choose 1 from the OPT !

Can you please help me to select Best One and Economical for me.

My Config :

Samsung 17" Monitor
Samsung 80 GB HDD (1 nos)
HP Dotmetrix + DJ Printer
DVD RW
And Want to Go in future for Fax and Scanner Too.

From above config can you able to help me to select one.

I requires UPS mainly to get time to suhtdown all components systematically. It requires hardly 10 minutes. So UPS with 10 minutes Power Supply will OK for me.

Thank You :)

Any latest branded UPS is ok dude , unless u want a really powerful one which can run for more than 30 minutes ! If you just want to shutdown your pc normally then any ups will be ok ! Eg : Microtek , Essma , Luminous , etc ! They all come with 2 years warranty so u need not worry about batteries !

get back ups rs 1000 VA it will cost you 6800 + vat or get simple back ups 500va will cost you around 2500

Firstly dont plug your printers/Fax/Scanner into the UPS - I dont think it is necessary to put heir load onto the UPS.

I use a APC BackUPS RS 800 but I would recommend the APC SmartUPS SUA750I which are a better series than the BackUPS - link to this UPS
http://www.apcc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SUA750I&ISOCountryCode=in
If this is not avaialable than look for the BackUPS RS 1000. I dont think the RS 800 I have is sufficient for my use. The SUA750I was not avaiable when I bought my UPS.

I get a backup time of 22 minutes with the RS 800 and I have 2 HDD - 2 Opticals - 19" Monitor - 3 120mm fans - Antec 480w SMPS - Display and Sound cards

Thanks Eazy,

Can you tell me an average price range of APC SmartUPS SUA750I.

And what is a price of RS800 when you baught (year of purchase please)

Also can you suggest me nice place to buy or see UPS physically.

Have a nice time

Phone APC they have very helpful staff - I got a lot of information from them when I bought my RS 800 1 year back for 5.5k They gave me the name of a place at Lamington Road - I cannot now remember the name of the shop. If I am not mistaken the Smart 750 was more expensive - about 1.5k more - but I think it is worth the price difference.

I am using a 800VA numeric for my system in Chennai, very good...

and a 1.5 Kva for the file server @ home....same numeric (which is chennai based as per my limited knowhow)..
Load - P4 660/925/1 GB/X800XT/3 HDD/2 drives/21"CRT/Z5500D
its an online UPS (Jabalpur has good power, but daily 1 hr cuts for supplying Gujarat), cost me around 15K

800VA cost around 3.8K

800VA used 3.2E/1GB/875P/6800GT/2 HDD/2 DVDRW/19" CRT/Z5300 without any probs...(backup was less but I don't need backup and 5 min is sufficient) just that it shouldn't trip...
PS using these loads none of the 2 UPS's have tripped...

Ohhhh,

I can't afford to Buy this UPS.

What about the 'APC 500 VA UPS' @ 2500 on ebay.

Voltage stabilisers only regularise the voltage fluctuations if any on your elec. line. the servo ones are good one and i do not have hands on experience of digital ones.

while ups are of two variety:
first only power back up : which just provide you with battery power when there is power outage.

secone ones are installed with inbuilt AVR (automated voltage regulator) here the power continuously gets checked and if voltage goes below or above recommended range it switches on the battery backup power.

then there is another classification of UPS too:

line interactive
truly online

Line interactives act according to line fluctuations and they have avr installed ot may be not.

while Online ups always provide power through batteries i mean to say the elec. power goes into ups gets scrutinised goes through battery and then it delivers the best rated power to the system.

online ups are recommended for very critical instruments like medical instruments, surgical instruments, pharmaceutical industry power backup where a slight variation can lead to a mishap.

in india
in line interactive ups APC is best and most sold.
in Online UPS Numeric is best and most sold.

current prices are beyond my scope and i can not comment on that wait for some other person to throw light on it.

most of the ups used for pc are line interactive ones as they are cheaper.

this was posted by me way back on this forum itself. hope this will clear a few points.

above two links have good discussion about ups so you can judge by it

i personally use two APC ones and they are just good.

wipro and numeric are also good.
