Hello Friends,

I have 2 system
  1. i5 for work
  2. P4 for Browsing, Gaming & little work for Nephew
Planning to by 1TB External HDD to use with i5 and P4 (most of time with P4 only).

Can I keep External HDD inside Cabinet to avoid mishandle by kids at home? What about HEAT/HOT issue?

Not sure if 1TB External HDD will work flawlessly with both system without any issue?

What Brand and Model should buy THAT will work with above (both) systems? Price Suggestion Please?

Seagate backup plus or WD Passport (at same time reading issue with WD Passport more inclined towards Seagate).

NOTE: Can't upgrade P4 as it won't possible up to 5.1 k budget :( (Mobo + RAM + Procy + HDD)

Thanks

any portable hdd will work as both systems will have usb ports.
suggest buying usb 3 based hdd as it will be future proof.

you can keep it inside cabinet as well it wont matter.[DOUBLEPOST=1364813870][/DOUBLEPOST]brands-- choose one which has higher warranty.

Seagate and WD both have 3 years warranty. On TE I read SAME ISSUE with WD Passport from various users, so thinking to buy Seagate.

External HDD will work fine with the system. You can also consider the Buffalo MiniStation 1TB USB 3.0

http://www.flipkart.com/buffalo-min...no=t_1&otracker=from-search&query=Buffalo HDD

It doesnt have a great backup software according to the reviews but performs very well. And as you can see from the ratings its the highest rated 1TB portable HDD in flipkart. I recommended this for my friend 4 months ago and he has been using this w/o any issues till now. You might be able to get better deals in various websites. Do browse various sites to get the best deal.

It is also serviced by Accel frontline (Same company handles Seagate RMAs)[DOUBLEPOST=1364828691][/DOUBLEPOST]http://www.shopclues.com/buffalo-1tb-pc-mini-station-usb-hard-disk-usb-3.0-en-2.html?source=cuelinks - Available for ~ 4.25k here. The site is pretty decent. Delivered a data card i ordered last week within the said delivery time.

I wonder if you plan to install it internally. you can use internal hard disk instead .. you have to open cabinet anyways if you wish to transfer data

Didnt notice the line "Can I keep External HDD inside Cabinet to avoid mishandle by kids at home? What about HEAT/HOT issue?" -> I wouldnt recommend it. Keep it outside. Do you want the HDD to be always connected to your PC? If not then keep the HDD inside the cupboard when not in use.

Hi DA and friends,

My P4 HDD is near to crash.

Now I wish to use Portable HDD to run the system, sorry for newbie, but:
  1. Can I install Win8 with P4 and use External HDD as Main HDD (bootable disk) as my P4 system HDD is near to end of life. I'm planning to buy New system in 2 years so No more IDE Buying.
  2. Yes, I wish to keep External HDD inside Cabinet as I don't have much data for backup. Suggest if it's good to keep External HDD ALL TIME inside cabinet as I planing to use it as Main Bootable HDD to run P4 system.
  3. Can I use this External HDD with i5 System? I have Win7 with i5 system?
Hope I will get answer of my above query before shopclues offer end :)

Thanks DA (Mode) for Shopclues link.

If it were me I wouldnt run the OS from the external HDD. I would still prefer to have a separate disk for the P4 system.
http://www.deltapage.com/list/index.html

80GB IDE - 1.2k and 160GB IDE - 1.35k. If you are not in need of lots of space or don't need to transfer large files then I would suggest a separate IDE for the P4 system since you are going to use it for 2 more years.

Already the external HDD is in a casing. Again keeping it inside the cabinet. Probably the bottom of it. Not sure whether the HDD will get proper ventilation.

An alternative to an IDE drive is adding a PCI SATA controller card and then using a regular SATA drive.

1. You can, but performance would be terrible since you'd be limited to 48MB/s. Even IDE is rated for 133MB/s. Plus USB would increase drive latencies. Just for comparison, I have a slow 5400rpm drive inside my laptop and a fast 7200rpm drive in an external USB 2.0 casing. The external drive is noticeably slower than even the internal 5400rpm drive. (Of course this could also be the controller in the casing.)
2. If you have to keep it inside the cabinet, try putting a fan to point at the drive to keep it cool.
3. External hard drives should work with any system that has a USB port.
