he has recently joined MCA from NIT, so kinda lookin for a decent config.

Please include details on what the lappy would be used for. Based on that, the TEians would be able to suggest.

the lappie will be used mainly for programming (c++, php, sql, perl, etc.) and apart from that, the usual browsing stuff !! Wont be used for gaming too much

for that budget, get yourself an Acer 4736. t6400, 3 gb ddr3 ram, 320gb hdd.

Acer Aspire 4736z or Acer Timeline... im sure you'll love the 8hours battery life of timeline + the specs are also quite good.
