Thinking to get one external HDD. My max budget is 6K.

Still yet to decide either 2.5" or 3.5".

Guys which is faster ?
USB 3.0 or eSata, I own Dell XPS L501x. Suggest me faster HDD which my lappie can support.

TIA :)

Buy a Seagate USB 1/0 2.5" external one.

For laptops, especially, the portability of a 2.5" is essential.

You'll get a 1TB HDD at 5.2k.

eBay India: 500GB Seagate GOFLEX 2.5" Portable HDD+3 Year Warranty (item 170621524710 end time 06-Apr-2011 08:30:00 IST)

GoFlex designed by Seagate keeping upgradeability in mind. It has groundbreaking interchangeable cable system, therefore it adds versatility and that put the port selection in your hands. GoFlex comes with USB 2.0 adapter and for USB3.0 or eSATA, you need to purchase adapter. Works on both Mac and Windows OS. Best bet when it comes to portable HDD. Of course you can grab a 1TB one or so according to your budget.

From what I have seen and read, eSATA gives better performance at the present time. But in my limited experience with eSATA drives, I found it not to be plug-and-play.

^thank you for replying :)

I have decided for 3.5", as I wil be getting more space. But have to think about 2.5" if they don't eat battery much and provide better speeds.

and also how much those eSata and USB 3.0 adapters would cost ?

How good is this - eBay India: Seagate GoFlex DESK 2TB 3.5" Portable External USB HDD (item 170624218074 end time 04-May-2011 08:53:58 IST)

Dont get less than 2 TB. You have made the right choice. I have bought a Goflex 2TB from Ebay recently. But I will advise you to get locally as you will get one locally at 5.2k approx. I only opted Ebay as I needed to get EMI option for payment. Goflex 2 Tb is decently fast.

:)

2.5" HDDs provide a great portability. :) And I've no idea about cost of those eSata and USB 3.0 adapters.. Should be cheap though. :ashamed:

Still if you wish to go for 3.5", you can go for either of the GoFlex HDD's link that you quoted. And I'll not recommend you to go for WD. Because of this: http://www.techenclave.com/storage-solutions/western-digital-issues-rma-problems-service-169713.html Even I've had bad experience with Western Digital RMA. So I prefere Seagate over WD. GoFlex, best bet when it comes to portable HDD.

I know 2.5 inches are quite portable but as far as storage capacity is concerned, the price is about double than 3.5 inches. OP dint mention he needs a hdd that should be ultra portable. Hence, I opted for the 3.5 inches, storage area gets importance in this case. Also, you can easily carry 3.5 inch hdds in bags, so its portable enuff IMO.

I do not think that there is a 2Tb portable hdd... Havent seen one as yet the max you can get and portable is 1Tb.

If you want just for backup and are not goin to carry it everywhere with you than your best bet is to go for the 3. 5 one as there will be no movement so lesser risks...

Okay.

What will be the transfer speeds in USB 3.0 and eSata ? Currently 1GB takes approx one min to transfer it on my iPod

Go for Goflex, I am using it 24/7 for my media player to play and download at night using dockstar, no problem at all....

Well, told him the same model. He has left Singapore now, but I am not sure he bought it :ashamed:

if not, then I might buy 1TB Ext Seagate :)

After you get the drive, please post HD Tune Pro's Benchmark.. I wanna have a look.

Anyways, best of luck with the purchase. :)

Ah! Correct. :ashamed:

Well, Goflex is decent fast. The speed compensates for the price. Or you can grab 2.5" drives..they are comparatively cheap as you know.
