i need a laptop which caters the following needs,the budget is around 35k~40k so on with the needs

The laptop will only be used for
1. Programming
2.Browsing
3.Downloading Movies
4.playing games like fifa and nfs at acceptable frame rates

^ Currently there are very few SandyBridge laptops in that price range(I was able to find only 1 actually), which also offers discrete graphics(if you wish to play games, this would be preferred)

thank you gkay but my friend only wants to get a dell or a sony laptop doesnt want to go for lenovo hp or hcl so can you reccomend me some laptops from those companies. :D

I dont see what the fuss is about, its not like he has a budget of Rs 1.00 lacs and he can take his pick. - He wants 2 specific premium brands, for a limited budget. If he is lucky he may get the option of 1 or 2 models at max - so its really a no brainer - just take what ever is available.
 
Okay let me run you through the options from Sony first.
EA - 14 inches
EB- 15.5 inches
EB45/EA45 - 36.5k/37k
i3 380M
4GB Ram
320GB HDD
AMD 5470M graphics

EA46 - 40k
i5 480M
4GB Ram
320Gb HDD
AMD 5470M GPU

Dell

You can customize Inspiron 15R with ATI 550V 1gb GPU,core i5 480M,500GB for around 40k

That's the cheapest I could find with dedicated GPU.

All others have Intel HD graphics and since you mentioned your friend would want to game as well then a dedicated GPU is needed.

No sandybridge solutions from Sony or Dell below 40k. Cheapest SB Dell is 47k and cheapest Sony Sandybridge is 51k.
 
Dell vostro 3350 is priced in your price range and has a 512mb graphics card too, which I suppose would do for mediocre games - not sure though. It has sandybridge too.

The only con is it's 13".

Not worth it. It costs 38990 for Windows Home BASIC, 2 GB ram,Intel IGP, Core i3 2310M which is inferior to i3 380M. Not worth it at all. The model costing 42590 comes with 6470M rest of the specs same as 38990 model. So that is even worse.
 
He might have to wait a bit longer if he wants a Dell laptop/ cheaper Sony which has SB and decent graphics, else he can go with what babu.mohan10 - Dell Inspiron with the 550v
 
watches everyone going ape over themselves suggesting laptops, when the original poster of the query is no where to be seen, and did not even do his basic home work - sheesh

Seriously? Sandy Bridge processors are better than the 1st generation Intel, rite ?

Clock to Clock - Yes.

But the i3 2310M is clocked @ 2.1GHz and i3 380M is clocked @ 2.53GHz!

But still the SB one has lower power consumption and better graphics. But when it comes to pure CPU muscle the arrandale wins simply because of the reason that the CPU clock is ~20% higher!

Check it out. Even the i3 370M has a slightly better Cinebench score.
