But don't they advise against using SSDs for writes? I've read people using them only for the OS and storing the page and hibernation files in the storage drive.
How true is that?
The only reason for that is how expensive they are currently.

I am ready to buy SSD but confused about its life? will the survive at least 5 years? and do they speed reduce overtime?

Have you checked the Normal MTBF of SSD's. If not, just check it.

You can also check the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid 500gb..One review says faster then mechanical drives and only 7% slower than true SSD.

"If we compare HDD vs Hybrid vs SSD on a value-to-performance scale, the Momentus XT wins hands-down. Based on our real-world test results, the Momentus XT trails behind the Vertex SSD by only 7% but outperforms the VelociRaptor by 22%. At only $0.31/GB of storage capacity, the Momentus XT delivers 156% better cost value than the VelociRaptor ($0.79/GB) and nearly 700% better value than the Vertex ($2.49/GB). The difference of 7% performance in most Windows applications is hardly worth the added expense of a standard SSD."

Read what you've posted again. The numbers in the review specifically.

The Vertex drives are not even OCZ's previous gen drives and they are already launching their next gen drives in a couple of months.
Additionally, none of the numbers, most definitely not Reads/IOPS seem to back up that crazy 7% figure.

I've tested momentus XT, Black Scorpio and the Momentus. Might be getting Blue Scorpio to test in a week or 2.

There's 7200 RPM versions in Seagate Momentus (just momentus)- 500 and 750gigs. Western Digital are releasing Black Scorpio 7200 rpm in India after a week or 2 with 5 years warranty. No word on the official pricing in India. You are getting Blue Scorpio but that comes with 3 year warranty. Still, I am sorta leaning towards Black Scorpio 7200rpm notebook drive.

The momentus XT that I got to test was with older firmwares but like stalker said, its just not worth the premium.

Does anyone knows, which company offer international warranty on SSD, my aunt is coming in 1 month, so will get it from US, may be i am inclining for a Revodrive :D

I think Corsair SSDs carry international warranty... I am not sure though... :) Check "Company Which Offer International Warranty" thread which is in pc peripherels section.... But i wud suggest u to buy SSD from here only to b on the safer side ;)

OP,

If you can wait then better to go for SSD's with new sandforce 2500 controller which are twice as fast as current SSD's.

Intel does AFAIK. Couple of those 40GB ones were on sale sometime back and had this clause I recall.
