Suggest network storage device for saving important data...

Vagabond

Guide
Friends,

I need some networking device so as to store/backup the valuable data in my current organisation. We are team of 7 working in the field of virtual testing using finite element tool. Typically every job once done has database files along with inputs and report files. The sizes vary from few MBs to few GBs. All previous data currently stored on portable drives and current year data is on our working systems. Till date the data is around 3 TB, and supposed to grow 1 TB every year per say.

I do understand that we can`t simply rely on those portable drives as the data stored is of shear importance and requires for similar new jobs.

Requirements,

- Should have current capcity of 4/8 TB
- should be upgrdable to higher capacities later/ add-remove-replace
- sholud be connected to server and should be accessible to 7 users from network
- priority is to data safety / speed is not major concern
- budget can be stretched to 50k

Thanks in advance !

P.S. - I can provide details of current setup, but being Mechanical Engineer don`t know what
exactly needs to be furnished before asking the advice, so let me know what parameters needed for you to suggest.

have i posted in wrong section ?

get the model you can afford.
search for SYNOLOGY India dealers. Can be bought online as well.
QNAP is another option, go through the specs. General Thumbrule - higher the price more the storage and speed ;)

Then make sure you regularly backup whatever is on the NAS.

Should have current capcity of 4/8 TB
Then you need that much as backup in addition to.

Remember the NAS is not backup especially if you RAID it. It's just for easy & high availability.

Try getting a Synology DS412+ which costs odd 600USD. Importing it directly from the Amazon US would be a cheaper option. Also you need to spend another 600 to get four 3TB drives. Running them in RAID 5 will give you data security (fault tolerance of one drive drive loss) as well as nearly 9TB of usable space.

I am using the DS213 for my home usage and the performance is stellar, when compared to those portable drives. The DS412+ is even better.

Have you checked the cost of any long-term professional online storage? Not the free ones like Dropbox/Drive. There will be other providers who will offer you high reliability. Just one more option for you to consider.

Thanks guys for your suggestions.

@Vasishta.Sushant - Preference will be to buy from Indian seller with installation/service as and when required.

@vpraveenis - I thought about it but dropped the idea considering the upload/download time. Also not sure company will like to keep the confidential data in the cloud.

If you want Indian seller, try calling HP. They have Soho nas units for 50k or so. Saw it at a dealer's place some years back.

Get a off the shelf NAS with atleast 4 bay options and fill it up with 2TB drive and put in RAID-5. Also ensure that you get a good GbE router if there is no gigabit setup.

You will need to extend your budget as 50k won't get you much. Since you are looking at long term reliability with Expandability you should look at a low end box from the pros like qnap/ netapp/ Hitachi etc. You should be able to start with 4 Tb and grow as you want upto the unit capacity. Plus they will give you the option of having an AMC as well, so in case of hardware failure you can get replacement parts.

The budget i quoted is a beginning one, can upgrade in future with adding more drives to it...

We have lenovo workstations for every team member, are they have anything suitable to offer.

I am making list of these suggested members, also contacting HP for a "solution", similarly check with lenovo.

Lenovo is not into Storage, but IBM is. Google for IBM smb offers india and you will get a clear idea of costs involved.
