Hi,

I am planning to buy a 29" CRT TV

I have gone thru the forums an most of them suggest Philips 29PT8836/94, the reply were posted 8-10 months back and model suggested is also not there on Philips India website.

TV guru's plz suggest some brand and model. Budget is 25K

Thanks

Sony-KV-FA29M83 and Onida-29 Poison 3500, though the onida one might exceed your budget a bit, but nevertheless will be a great buy, if you have your mind set on a CRT.

that philips model is a bargain if u can find them as the model is stopped now way better than onida.
u can find HD models of sony in the grey market costs around 24000 better than philips.

for around 28500 u can get samsung or sony 26inch lcd in the grey market.

Technology has gone to next generation from CRT to LCD and now from LCD they have gone to OLED.

Now the backlight which is necessary for LCD are not needed for OLED as they are organic substance which beams colors and has 1000 time quicker response time than LCD's. Also power is saved to maximum effort.

Hence at this time getting an CRT will be investing in outdated technology, wait for sometime for the LCD price to drop due to the introduction on OLED TV (sony has already introduced and next will be toshiba). I am sure due to this there will be a drastical drop in LCD TV prices. Go for them.

dude at 25 k , u can find ur self a grey market samsung or sony 26 " LCD easily. here in delhi samsung 32" n sony 32 " are available from 32 - 35 k easily @ gaffar.

^^

No offence,

But if every one think in this way than you need to wait more as When OLED hit Indian Market with Reasonable Price some latest technology may be waiting to knock your Door .....

LCD price will be going to down as Rupees Gain More Stronger and there is some custom duty cuts soon on LCDs :)

Is it advisable to go in for Grey Market product ? what about the warranty/Gurantee ?

At low end it's OK, like we still Buys Casio/Citizen calculators and in long run they prove that they are Best, but it's just from Rs.250-2000 but for 30k you must think twice, as I think by giving 5-8k more if you get 3-5 yrs warranty than why take chance with grey? (When we all know that either with grey or with white you are going to get same Chinese/korean make product)

If in grey you find Product with Japanese parts, than can check your luck with.:)

My advise:

For now-
If you are not hard pressed for money - buy simplest 29" flat CRT Sony TV that you can find.
Else
Take a chance and buy cheapest Value-for-money 29" CRT that you can find. Get assurance from dealers/advisers that it lasts for 2-3 years.

After 2 years -

Pass on (or sell) your CRT (Sony or other) to some needy person. Buy a full HD LCD TV.

There is a Samsung CRT 29" which is 100 Hz, HDTV (can support 720p resolution), and has component in etc. The picture quality is terrific. Its official price is 28k as I had enquired about this 3 days back at a Samsung showroom. A lil bit of bargaining and it can be had at 27 I am sure with b&w. In gray if you can source this, you might get it in 20k.

The only problem with an HD CRT is that most movies are in 16:9 format these days, and black lines or wrong reoslution can be annoying!
