Suggestion for free 2D CAD Software

Guys, I need some help with finding a freeware or opensource 2D CAD software which I will use to draw some architectural maps. A software which can deal with any unit of length (like yard, meter, foot etc.) will be preferred.

Also, is there any 2D CAD software which can also calculate the area of any particular plot (of any shape) if I draw the directions and angels correctly?

BTW do check out Google SketchUp. Its a pretty user friendly s/w.
